Woody Guthrie Quotes β A man who was a unique individual.
Woody Guthrie Quotes β A man who was a uniqueΒ individual.
Woody is one of my heroes. He stood for fairness and justice. He stood against racism and supported the poor and exploited. Woody exemplified the Protest song that gave rise to Bob Dylan and the sixties rebellion against the establishment.
Some men rob you with a six-gun β others rob you with a fountain pen.
The bankers and the politicians who support them have robbed the whole world. The people who hold power and pull the strings, who control the inequality and war in order to create profit, rob everyone. The system is corrupt. For someone to earn in 45 minutes more than an average man can earn from all the hard work of a full year is simply wrong.
The world is filled with people who are no longer needed β and who try to make slaves of all of us β and they have their music and we have ours.
Those people who hold the power have created a system that takes from the bottom and gives to the top. The inequality is obscene. There has to be more fairness and justice.
The best way to get to know any bunch of people is to go and listen to their music.
Music is a universal language. It transcends words.
Thereβs several ways of saying whatβs on your mind. And in states and counties where it ainβt too healthy to talk too loud, speak your mind, or even vote like you want to, folks have found other ways of getting the word around. One of the mainest ways is by singing.
Woody sung his truth β about justice and freedom β on picket lines β to the unions and people being exploited.
I hate a song that makes you think that you are not any good. I hate a song that makes you think that you are just born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing. Because you are too old or too young or too fat or too slim too ugly or too this or too that.
We are all human and should be treated with compassion. Racism, sexism and inequality need addressing.
Love is the only medicine I believe in.
He sound like JoseΒ Mujica the Uruguayan President who said that the only good addiction is love.
A folk song is whatβs wrong and how to fix it or it could be
whoβs hungry and where their mouth is or
whoβs out of work and where the job is or
whoβs broke and where the money is or
whoβs carrying a gun and where the peace is.
These are the songs we need more of. We need songs about real issues β thereβs enough soppy love songs.
You canβt write a good song about a whorehouse unless youβve been in one.
Woody had not only been in the whorehouses, heβd been on the road, heβd been down and out. He knew what it was like.
The words are the important thing. Donβt worry about tunes. Take a tune, sing high when they sing low, sing fast when they sing slow, and youβve got a new tune.
The words are the important thing.

Nobody has quite the mouth that Dr John has. Itβs an incessant stream that can bring tears. Hereβs a few:

Increasingly, I have to deal with bereavement. I could go to five funerals a week. But that many vol au vents is not good for you.
Mark E Smith Quotes
Mark E SmithΒ Quotes
They donβt come much more strange than the Fall. Iβve heard Mark sing half a concert while lying on a sofa in the dressing room. Iβve seen him singing behind the speakers with just the back of his head visible. He accosts his musicians, detunes instruments and generally disrupts. He is largely indecipherable. Yet the Fall have produced a body of work that is incredible. There is a Beefheart influence and a pile of riffs. The words are interesting. I donβt know where itβs coming from but it sure connects.
The thing with me, I canβt talk about my work. I find it very difficult.
Every day is great for me. I dislike rose-coloured glasses.
A lot of musicians are really hard to deal with. They arenβt as smart as me..
I used to be psychic, but I drank my way out of it.
When I was 18, the vision was to make music that didnβt exist, because everything else was so unsatisfactory.
Blue cheese contains natural amphetamines. Why are students not informed about this?
If youβre going to play it out of tune, then play it out of tune properly.
If itβs me and your granny on bongos, then itβs the Fall.

Quote 7 β Woody Guthrie β This machine kills fascists
Quote 7 β Woody Guthrie β This machine killsΒ fascists
Woody Guthrie rambled round in the thirties, forties and fifties in America. He travelled with black and white alike. He stood for fairness and justice. He stood on picket lines with working men striking for a fair wage and fair treatment. He opposed injustice, racism, sexism and elitism.
He wrote songs like nobody had ever heard before.
The quote I am going to give from him is the one he painted on his guitar β
βThis machine kills fascistsβ
It is a simple concept for a complex issue. He was saying that you do not destroy poisonous ideology like fascism and fundamentalism with guns β you destroy them with music, with words, with education. You change the minds not blow up the bodies.
That has informed my life.
Music is a powerful tool for changing peopleβs minds and awakening their humanity and love of their fellow men and women. The guitar was Woodyβs weapon and a powerful one it was too.
Education is the other tool.
We wonβt defeat ISIS on the battlefield alone β we need to educate the fools who believe in violence.

Quote 6 β Nelson Mandelson β education and outlaws
Quote 6 β Nelson Mandelson β education andΒ outlaws
Nelson Mandela impressed me no end. To go through all of the violence, threats and intimidation that he did; to be imprisoned with hard labour and horrendous conditions for so long; to see his friends tortured and killed; and to come out of the end not twisted by hatred. That is a towering figure of a man. He is an example to us all.
I have selected two quotes:
βEducation is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.β
β Nelson Mandela
I agree β the way forward has to be education! It is why retrograde, primitive psychopaths like ISIS and the Taliban blow up schools and hack bloggers to death with machetes. Fundamentalists cannot stand truth. Their lies do not stand up to scrutiny. Education kills their philosophy.
βWhen a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw.β
β Nelson Mandela
That was how I felt as a young man. If you do not believe in the philosophy of the society you live in you have to put yourself outside and oppose it.
