The Crystalline Beauty of the Deadly Sundew

Round by the water’s edge there were marshy areas with sundew plants. I haven’t seen these plants for ages. As kids we used to catch hapless insects and callously stick them to the sticky fingers of the sundew leaves to watch them close over the poor struggling creatures.

These plants look so beautiful with their bright reds and greens and the hair-like tendrils with their sticky drops glistening in the sun enticing unsuspecting insects to land and meet their doom. You wouldn’t think that a thing of such attractiveness could auger such a terrible end. Once entrapped resistance was futile. The more they struggled the more they became encased in the sticky fluid. It was like glue and they were as helpless as the flies that land on wet paint. They will be slowly digested alive and their nutrients absorbed. What a terrible fate.
