Reducing the world’s population is the greatest imperative of the moment. A large global population is the cause of mass poverty, environmental destruction, war, mass migration, the overuse of the world’s resources and is driving thousands of species to extinction. Something has to happen.
Here is how to address it:
- Recognise that there is a crisis.
- Publicise the drastic need to reduce population and give reasons (pollution, resources, space, wildlife, happiness, migration, poverty, war…..). Justify the crucial need to reduce our numbers.
- Make reduction of population really high profile.
- Bring religious leaders and politicians on board.
- Create a unified front.
- Use education to bridge cultural attitudes.
- Provide extensive contraception/vasectomies etc.
- Provide pensions so people do not require children to support them.
- Provide social sickness benefits so that people do not require children to support them.
- Give financial incentives to reduce families.
- Create a social attitude towards small families and away from large families.
Failing that just create a virus and wipe us all out. The world would be a better place.
That last comment! What a horrible thought, Opher! You’re getting OUT THERE now! 🙂
It is exactly what happens. You see it in the fossil record time and time again. We’ll probably do it to ourselves though.
Most of the above has very little chance of any effect except in the western first world.
Perhaps a 2 child allowance per family is a possibility and seems to be the modern norm for most people in western society other than Catholics and Muslims.
Three quarters of the world produce multiple children to help with work. Although many die as infants, this way of life will not change.
Over and above age old customs, the biggest nemesis is the Roman Catholic church who take great steps to undo all the measures implemented regards contraception in Africa, South America and southeast Asia. As long as they maintain a stranglehold, forget it.
Slightly odd subject for someone responsible for producing 4 children which is twice the average? If every family produced 4 children it’s not difficult to see just how quickly population does get out of control.
We live and learn. It wasn’t so bad back then. Since we had kids the world has been trashed and population soared.
Yes the Catholic Church is ridiculous.
But it has to change or else there is no future. There is no choice. We do it or we suffer the consequences.
Or else prescribe so many antibiotics that the bugs develop immunity … one way or another we’ll manage to screw it up!
I keep thinking about what Christine said in response to one of my posts:
‘6) 800 billion dollars has been spent on weaponry in the middle east. (Yes BILLION!) Somehow, the US produced it all. Just pulled it out of their back pocket, you know how they do. Miraculous, is it not? And yet, kids in school cannot have desks, heat, air conditioning, text books, safety nor proper food. Not to mention music, art and theater education.’
I think that says it all. We have our priorities wrong?
Fight the good fight, eh? The middle east is a vortex of life-loathing self-destruction surrounded by piranhas. And now, in other news …
So how can you express support to them?
Support to Who? I’m not supporting any of them. I’m making a choice between two people who both represent the same elite, for the same greedy motives, and I’m selecting the one who I believe is the lesser of two evils. How can you support an egomaniac like Trump who is obviously in it for the money and ego.
In it for the money! You make me laugh.
You’ve got the wrong one – see how much the Clinton’s have scammed, then tell me Trump’s in it for the money.
The lesser of two evils? That’s hilarious.
Secretary of State for the most massive nuclear arms programme and you’ve drawn that conclusion?
You really believe they are not both in it for the money? That Clinton and Trump are really altruistic people trying to make the world better? They are both selfish, attention seeking megalomaniacs. But it still comes down to who can do the most harm.
Well you’ve got your view, and an entrenched hatred of Clinton and liberalism, and I’ve got mine.
No. For instance, Trump will not be taking the full salary. He really doesn’t need the money and I think this is quite obvious to all.
Please check out how much the Clinton’s have scammed in recent years. If that doesn’t sway you, nothing will.
The most harm would perhaps be a nuclear weapons development programme.
I’m not impressed by Trump not taking a salary. It is peanuts compared with what he is setting up with his own interests. He’s doing that as cover, nothing more. He’s raking it in.
I know Clinton scams. They all do. I’m not under any illusion on that.
I don’t like nuclear weapons at all. I’d do away with the lot of them but I don’t see why you think Trump will be better on that score.
There’s no basis to all your conjecture and way, way off the scope of reality. Don’t you think there will be people watching to see if he abuses his position? It’s called Impeachment.
So you think Clinton’s scams are normal, run of the mill sort of levels. You are complete naive here and really need to do some homework.
My 13 year old niece who usually just repeats everything her none too bright mother tells her has got a better handle on the situation.
Jeezuz, Opher, get a grip here!
You bet I hate Clinton. She’s a monster killer with a lot of blood on her hands and millions of dollars of hived-off money in her bank account. She’s as corrupt as it gets.
Actually, I dislike liberalism when employed for the sake of liberalism. It has a tendency to focus on the 1 and not the other 99.
I don’t like liberalism when it ignores the obvious and debases society at large.
You’re not suggesting that Clinton is liberal?
I don’t have such a low opinion of Clinton as you and I only see her as more liberal than Trump.
I was brought up in a very dour conservative era of repression, conformity and control. The sixties was a breath of fresh air that blew it all away. It brought in freedom, expression, individuality and much less repression. While that has been abused and taken for granted and led to some empty hedonism I still value it greatly. I would not want to live in that joyless conformity of grey drabness.
You obviously know very little indeed about her. That’s your problem.
What’s your upbringing got to do with anything here?
What topic are you on?
It is not about my upbringing Andrew – it was about the era – the fifties and the claustrophobic, vicious repression and conformity that stifled life. Liberalism was uplifting and energising.
But what’s your 50’s upbringing got to do with Clinton’s so-called liberalism? The one that it’s OK to threaten to nuke, in a liberal kinda way? And she’s 60 years after the event in another country on the other side of the Atlantic. What’s the connection? If any it could only be White racist liberalism, because there certainly wasn’t any were one Black. Not a lot has improved really in these 60 years either.
Population is not the cause of hunger and wars. Overpopulation is not the real problem.
I respect you opinion but there can be another opinion on this.
https://thenextopinion.wordpress.com/2017/02/01/population-explosion/
Well that is interesting – and I do agree that the hoarding of huge wealth by a few is a major crime – but I still believe that the drastic effect on nature by such a burgeoning population is the main cause of extinctions, pollution and climate change. It leads to war, devastation of nature and mass migration.
So now we have two major problems to solve!!
Dear Opher, great to hear from you!
IMO, when people like us say, “population is the main cause of extinctions, pollution and climate change”, we forget that we are part of that population and in our unconscious mind we are referring someone else. If we try to control illiteracy, ignorance and inequality then the issue of over population will automatically ceases to exist 🙂
I agree with you to an extent. I am not so sure we have the time to ignore it though. There needs to be a far greater urgency because the natural world is being destroyed at such a fast rate. Literacy, security, education of women, social support, employment and equality are, as you rightly point out, the planks by which we build a world that is not overpopulated and is in harmony with nature. We need to put things right globally!
