Roy likes to be extreme and controversial. The opening to this song is typical. He certainly liked to ensure that he was not thought of as mainstream. He courted controversy.
This introduction starts with the dole queue. Back in the seventies if you were out of work and receiving benefit you used to have to go in and sign on. You were hustled into a booth where a stern-faced person checked your details and gave you your unemployment benefit. It was a humiliating experience and not one guaranteed to make you feel good about it. There was mass unemployment.
Roy is sending it up – giving the Queen  his autograph – the doorman bowing – the smiles. The use of yen is a double entendre – money and sexual arousal.
Unemployment was a direct result of political policies. The government kept millions out of work.
Strar Trek with Captain Kirk was big. Smoking dope and rolling spliffs was still revolutionary.  Linda Lovelace and the porn movie Deep Throat was a sensation.
