What a great evening!
This was their farewell tour. Though there was a glimmer of hope in that Willie did say that they would probably get back together for the odd show or two. I hope so.
These two are a one-off. I’m not sure if it was mainly a musical event or a comedy act. It had the large audience in roars of laughter.
It is clear that this is an act that has evolved over many years. They had the timing and interaction of a perfect double act. The basis of the act being the juxtaposition of the over-enthusiastic Otway with the long-suffering sardonic nature of Barrett; the musicianship of Barrett with the inept exuberance of Otway. It works perfectly. The underlying premise is that they need each other. Without Otway Barrett would be far less. Without Barrett Otway would not make the impact. Like night and dark they need each other.
How much is an act is not clear. Does Willie really hate Otway? Is he really totally pissed off by having to play musical foil to the exuberant Otway? Who cares?
The one-liners, asides and antics all worked. The grinning, bobbing, naïve Otway contrasted with the efficient, talented, bored Barrett. It worked.
Not that Barrett was without his craziness. He worked his way through a range of instruments (all played with great expertise) including a balalaika, dustbin and bagpipes. The finale was the hilarious way he worked through his final guitar. Incredible. He was the perfect foil for Otway.
If you want a great evening out then go and these this mad duo. They are unique and brilliant. My only regret was that I forgot to take my camera.
