How the West lost its mind and swung to the extreme right!

How the West lost its mind and swung to the extreme right!

Back in the 1980s everything was not brilliant but it was good. Both in the UK and USA racism was on the decrease, society was fairly prosperous and compassionate.

Then things went haywire. There was a big rise in xenophobia/racism, fear, hatred and a big swing to the right. We entered the greedy, heartless world of fear, hate and selfishness epitomised by Trump and Brexit. We found ourselves in the Post-Truth era in which narcissistic, charismatic conmen were able to paint things in black and white, make preposterous promises, stoke up fear and get themselves elected.

Here’s what I think happened:

1979Soviet invasion of AfghanistanThe Russians tried to take Afghanistan. The USA supported the Mujahidin and funded them. Osama Bin Laden came in as a foreign fighter and we had the start of the extreme Islamic groups – al-Qaeda and the Taliban (funded by the CIA).  The Russians were kicked out in 1989. The USA increased its presence and interests in Saudi resulting in an extreme form of Islam and an anti-USA/West sentiment. They saw the West as anti-Islam and wanted them out.
1990sIslamic terrorismAl-Qaeda became operational with many acts of terrorism. This created fear and started to generate a negative attitude towards Islam and Arabs.
20019/11 & invasion of AfghanistanThe flying of planes into the Twin Towers sent a wave of fear and hysteria through the USA and West. In a knee-jerk response Bush generated a War Against Terrorism and invaded Afghanistan. This played into the hands of the terrorists who declared it a war against Islam. The USA found themselves in a war they could not win.
2003Invasion of IraqUnder the guise of a War against Terrorism, with Iraq seen as a threat possessing Weapons Of Mass Destruction and seat of power in the region with terrorist links, the USA (with Blair as its chief poodle) invaded Iraq. At the time there was talk of the oil money but the truth was that it was a show of power and strength that was intended to intimidate the likes of Libya, Syria, Iran and Saudi. There was no plan on how to get out, no knowledge of the tribal situations and the Sunni/Shia splits, and no real plan. They wanted a big show of strength and to topple Saddam Hussein. Once more they got thems4elves enmeshed in a war they could not win.
2003Rise of ISISThe invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq proved fertile for extreme Islam. They presented it as an attack on Islam and recruited. In the vacuum in Iraq the warlords reigned and gave rise to ISIS. The terrorism increased and ISIS became a bogie-man.
2005London bombingThe Islamic terrorism increased coupled with waves of Arab immigrants fleeing various conflicts in the Middle East. The suspicions grew, the fear grew and it was used by various parties – namely – the terrorist groups and ISIS (for recruitment and fanatical teachings based on the need to protect Islam from attack) and the right-wing groups who used the fear to stir up racism and xenophobia with images of being flooded with terrorists, rapists, criminals and drug-dealers. In the USA it was the waves of immigrants from Central and South America. The Right-wing thrived on the implicit racism against illegal immigration and threat of Islamic terrorism.
2016BrexitUsing fears of terrorists, mass immigration and anti-EU sentiment the Right-wingers of the ERG, with the connivance of Cummings, Johnson, Gove and Farage, plotted a break from Europe. Promising to secure borders and a sunlit future with masses of money for the NHS and a repulsion of five million Turks supposedly heading our way, the country voted for Brexit in a tight result. People like Rees-Mogg made millions and Johnson (the lying conman) got himself elected but the sunlit uplands were but a mirage, a fabrication and we were all shafted.
2017TrumpOn a similar far-right promise of security, walls and America first, with the promise of prosperity, resurrection of old technologies (oil, coal, fracking and steel) Trump promised to Make America Great Again. By pandering to the American right and the strange (given his wildly immoral past) bedfellows of the Christian evangelists (willing to sup with the devil in order to get their extreme views met with draconian legislation on things like abortion) and the NRA, he managed to get himself elected creating an extreme right seizure of the GOP Republicans. The nutcases of the Tea Party now held sway.
2020sTrump, Brexit and the far-rightThe Tea Party radicals and ERG loonies were now in control with a narcissistic imbecile and a buffoon of a clown in charge – both looking like scarecrows. Everything started going pear-shaped.
NowThe demise of Trump and JohnsonFortunately the West began to wake from their thrall and realise they had been lied to and led up the garden path. America wasn’t becoming great and there were no sunlit uplands.  We’d been conned. Both Trump and Johnson walked off with millions into the sunset and we’re left in the wreckage.

Now, have we got Trump, Johnson, Brexit, MAGA, Erdogan, Oban, Meloni, Le Penn and the rest of the odious right-wing chancers out of our system or are we going to have to wait a bit longer?

Has Islamic extremism burnt itself out? Or are other potential Bin Laden’s stirring up religious hatred?

Can we start putting right the immense damage done by Brexit and MAGA and start building bridges?

Then there is Ukraine!

The Alternative Universe

What if the CIA hadn’t armed Bin Laden and set up al-Qaeda?

What if Bush had not invaded but simply taken out the terrorist camps?

What if……..?

What is it that Russia wants?

I wrote this three years ago before the invasion of Ukraine. At the time we saw Russia using cyber attacks to test out our responses. They had cyber factories who were pumping out directed propaganda via social media. They were found to be sending out directed propaganda to support the election of Trump and to promote Brexit. They were interfering with, and undermining our democracy.

They wanted Brexit to happen and Trump elected. It paid for them to have the USA hopelessly divided with a Kremlin-loving moron in charge. They wanted the EU split and NATO weakened.

They succeeded and then invaded Ukraine. That’s where it went wrong.

What is it that Russia wants?

To divide and conquer

That is the simple plan.

Pumping out the cyber.

Doing all they can.

They want the USA divided

And Europe split apart.

Populist leaders

Who haven’t any heart.

They don’t need

To go to war.

Targetting views

Into the homes of the poor.

Spreading rumours

And conspiracy.

In some modern-day

Piracy.

A wedge between allies

Suspicion into minds.

Deep State is after you,

Break the ties that bind.

To divide and conquer

That is the simple plan.

Pumping out the cyber.

Doing all they can.

Poetry – In The Land of Darkness

In The Land of Darkness

In the land of new darkness

You cannot see a friend.

In the gloom of fear

Terror looms around the bend.

Armed and wary,

Shoot first ask later,

Drown and cage,

Through the eyes of a serial hater.

Opher 6.6.2018

I feel that the fear of immigration and terrorism has created a tragedy. It has landed us with both Brexit and Trump.

The terrorists have won. They split us. They are gleefully watching us destroy ourselves.

Who would have believed that?

We trust nobody. Friend falls out with friend. Strangers are all potential terrorists. We have created fear and hatred that is cyclic. It regenerates itself.

Fascism is on the rise. It’s the thirties all over again. Just substitute Jew for Muslim. The wave of hate is heading towards war.

We live in a land of callousness and darkness.

Time for a bit of love!!!

Poetry – In These Toxic Times

In These Toxic Times

It’s all change in these toxic times

Where the ghosts of days that never were,

Like phantom fairy castles

Glimpsed in mists among the clouds,

Loom large on a pedestal of nostalgic lies.

The new guard, regaled in fascist clothing,

Unleash waves of fear and hatred

As purity is threatened by change.

But life is change and always has been

And the past was always badly stained.

The storm breaks upon the shore

As rollers pound the beaches,

Cities and people.

As the waves of ingress

Wash away compassion,

Wash away hope, care and love.

As the wind howls and ushers in

Gales of callous cruelty, despair and anger.

It’s all change in these toxic times

As the hate is channeled and directed.

There is no room for empathy, tolerance and welcome.

For the waves of threat are crashing against the cliffs

Bringing down the whole continent

As the hurricane blows away all we once stood for.

This country, built on compassion and a friendly smile,

Now a bastion of defiant fury

That puts children in the dog pound

Walls between us

And bombs amongst the crowd.

For centuries an island of hope,

A beacon to the oppressed,

A refuge from terror.

For it is all change in these toxic times

Where every stranger is the enemy.

The beacon has gone out.

The hope has been extinguished.

And the refuge become the prison.

The welcoming smile is now a snarl

The helping hand a fist

The door is built of razor wire.

The nostalgia for those pleasant times

Ironically based on fake memories.

Opher – 22.6.2018

I’m becoming nostalgic for those pleasant times before Brexit and Trump.

It seems to me that these two events have unleashed a great wave of division, fear and hatred. The politicians stir up the emotions for their own ends. Immigration and terrorism are used to promote their own political careers.

Immigration has been used as a tool. There has been too much but the fears are exaggerated in order to create fury as Islamophobia is deployed as a weapon.

Looking back through rose-tinted glasses to those olden days, (ignoring the racism, poverty, hardship, misogyny, disease and gross inequality) we are led to believe that things have got worse.

They haven’t.

Poetry – Election Reality

Election Reality

As glee turns to gloom

In the stroke of a pen

Ballot papers

Crash in the box.

Supporters all cheer

While clenching their fists

And sweat gathers

In socks.

They await the count

As the tellers tot up and tension grows in the room.

Aspirations and hopes

Hang on anxious threads yearning to lift the gloom.

Who can tell the outcome?

The people have spoke!

The arrogant fall.

The certainty broke.

Now’s not the time

For the bold to choke!!

Opher – 8.6.2017

There is always a great deal of excitement around elections. We stay up all night to see our most hated heinous politicians voted out and to await the outcome.

Referendums are even worse.

It doesn’t always work out the right way though. Often we are landed with an obnoxious outcome that we have to swallow. All too often the results go against the dreams we have for the future.

The art is to pick yourself up and continue the fight for what is right.

The dream is not destroyed – merely delayed.

Poetry – Election Blues

Election Blues

Brexit and Trump are setting the scene

As crisis grips the world.

The fascists and right are on the march

As the liberal dream is felled.

There is a divide between young and old;

A divide between rich and poor;

A divide between leave and remain;

Between changers and hard-core.

The country is split as hatred rules.

No consensus is in sight

As arguments violently rage

Giving no glimmer of light.

Friend takes on friend with vile and bitter words,

Personal attacks and passionate abuse from computer nerds.

No idea how to heal the wounds that gape

To reconcile conflicting views and beat them into shape.

There is a divide between young and old

A divide between rich and poor

A divide between leave and remain

Between changers and hard-core

It is bridges that end divides – not walls

Talking is better than fighting –

Heed the calls!!!

Opher – 9.6.2017

There are always power-mad people who look to exploit everyone. They will lie and cheat to gain power and line their own pockets. They lead us up the garden path.

Fascism is an evil.

The scapegoating of those in need and the endorsement of division and hatred is deplorable.

I look towards a future which is outward looking and based on justice and freedom. I don’t want to be locked up behind walls. I want to be out there enjoying the differences.

Let’s break down the barriers and chose to live!
