Thank You for the REVIEWS and ratings!

Reviews are the lifeblood of an author. We live or die by them.

I check my reviews on Amazon regularly – not out of vanity – but to hear what people actually think about my books and writing.

Writing is a long, lonely business. When you are working on a book you are very subjective. In no position to judge its worth.

It gives me great pleasure to read what people think of my books – that gives me the impetus and enthusiasm to go on.

My new book – The Time Traveller – was published yesterday. I await the first review with bated breath!

THANK YOU for leaving reviews on Amazon or Goodreads. I read every one and they give me sustenance.

Having ordered through Amazon and still in the process of enjoying Opher Goodwin’s paperback book detailing Roy Harper’s most illustrious recording career, i have to declare that this is one heck of a read! the author has personally known Roy, as a friend, since the mid 1960s,even attending Harper’s very early gigs at London’s celebrated Les Cousins club, in deepest Soho, where many later famous Singer/Songwriters played nightly, such as Al Stewart, John Martyn, Sandy Denny. Bert Jansch, Davey Graham Paul Simon Martin Carthy ,and ,of course, Roy Harper himself! Harper later went on to a fairly famed career as a Poet/Alternative ‘Singer-Songwriter’, being musically admired by the likes of such famed Luminaries as Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, Pink Floyd’s Dave Gilmour, Kate Bush, Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson(who later admitted Roy’s Music was a big influence on his career ,in the 1960s!..Having myself personally attended, over 4 decades ,..scores of live Roy Harper concerts. Roy Harper will always remain, for me, personally, quite probably Britain’s very finest Songwriter ,of unusually deep and profound Poetic depth ,and with an acoustic guitar style far far greater than most other Musicians aspired to…(inspired, of course by his contemporaries at the time, namely Bert Jansch, and the legendary Davey Graham!).This book, just now released is a great insight behind the actual meaning of Roy’s Lyrics, and goes song by song, through all of Roy’s amazing Albums ,right up to the present times, that is from 1966’s ‘Sophisticated Beggar’ to his last recorded Album, namely ‘Man & Myth’ and further covers live Recordings and still unreleased songs…what makes Roy Harper stand out way above his musical contemporaries is the undeniable depth of Lyrical Mastery to his Songs, many which now have become ‘Classics’.’ I hate the White Man’/’Another Day’/’When an Old Cricketer’/’Me and my Woman’/’Highway Blues’;/’One of those Days in England’/”Hallucinating Light’/’South Africa’/’12Hours of Sunset’/etc etc ,the list is of course Endless! For me surely surely England’s finest ever Singer/Songwriter, who also possessed a wonderful Vocal delivery, a voice so much more distinctive than most!….,Opher’s excellent book is a lovingly written reflection of Roy Harper’s amazing Musical output, and a successful attempt at revealing more of just what his songs were about! i find it an essential read, and it sits perfectly as a later companion to Roy’s own Musical Biography book, namely his ‘Passions of Great Fortune’, from 2003.!!no-one but Opher could have released a book on Roy Harper ‘s songs quite like this one, i say. Full marks

  • I am a Roy AND Nick Harper fanatic, and wouldn’t you know it… The industrious and illustriously wonderful Opher Goodwin has written a book about both of their musical journeys!!! I love reading both, especially the one highlighting Roy’s songwriting. Opher is still in touch with Roy as far as I know and was actually present at several recording studios during the making of more than one of those brilliant albums! I can’t say enough good things about his thoughts on each album’s songs and Roy’s life. Truly a must have for any Harper fan because there’s definitely no other book like it! An in depth biography or even autobiography would be most welcome as well! Cheers!

Success

How do you judge success??

I left a well-paid job as a Headteacher early to pursue my passion for writing. I have spent the past fifteen years rewriting and writing. I now have around a hundred and twenty books that I have written. I am completely free to write what I like.

I was fortunate enough to gain contracts with a publisher – Sonicbond. One contract led to another and I now have 8 books on my most cherished rock musician singer songwriters published with them. Is that success?

I have written at least a dozen Sci-fi novels that I am very pleased with even though I cannot land a publisher for them. I have self-published them with mixed sales. Is that success?

My other books include education, art, beat poetry, novels, biography, travel, antitheism and rock music – anything that turns me on. I self-publish them. Is that success?

For fifteen years I have been enjoying writing and have produced two whole shelves of my books. Is that success?

I have accrued many excellent reviews (and the odd bad one). Is that success?

While my books do sell in modest numbers I have never had a real flier and all the money I have made probably only covers the costs. Taking the cost of computer, laptop and WordPress, plus consumables, into account I probably break even.

If I had stayed on at my career for the five or six years possible I could have left with a lot more money. Would that have been success?

Now, there is no denying that it would be wonderful to sell vast numbers of books, gain lucrative contracts and awards and have huge numbers of glowing reviews and a massive financial reward, but that would only be the icing on the cake.

Success for me is all about doing what I have enjoyed doing, holding the products of my efforts in my hand and reading that some people have found them worthwhile. I really value those reviews and that people find my books worth buying. Thank you. That feels like success for me.

Thank You for your Kind Reviews – A passion for Education – The story of a Headteacher

You all humble me.

I did not go into teaching to change the world. I stumbled into it. But once there I set about putting right the terrible, mind-numbing experience that I had suffered throughout my own education experience. I was bullied, threatened, belittled, beaten and demotivated by teachers. The teaching I received was appalling. I was determined to make teaching the enjoyable, mind-expanding partnership I knew it could be.

This book tells that journey.

I thank all your reviews. I cherish them. Thank you!

As an retired teacher and Head of Department I found this book a joy to read. It is many things – personal biography, passionate polemic, practical handbook, education history, inspirational text, you name it – woven together in a natural, organic way which really gives you the feel of school life. The author knows whereof he speaks and in friendly fashion takes you, the reader, by the hand on a headlong and often exciting journey through the maze of modern education. His vision is clear and compelling, he knows what works and what doesn’t, he wants you to share his profound sense of the human potential which we can unlock if only we get our schools right. He articulates a philosophy which puts the whole child at its centre and explores the relationships underlying the magic of educational development. The book is written in a direct, heartfelt, jargon-free style and is packed with amusing anecdotes which illuminate his principles, unlike many dry books on the subject. Passionate and humorous and unafraid of controversy, it certainly gets you thinking. I found it a real page-turner and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in good education, whether outside or inside the teaching profession. For anyone connected with school management, in any capacity, it is essential reading. A unique and valuable voice.

Mr Goodwin was a fantastic headteacher at Beverley Grammar School. He was respected by even the most troublesome of students, would not tolerate bullying or intimidation, which was quite rare as future ones sadly did, and he instilled in myself and others a passion for learning and reading that led me to read law and go into business.

He had a profound influence on myself and others, looking back, knew so many of us by first name, and was a warm and kind hearted guy, as his son was too. Great characters, which cannot be bought or learned.

This is also a great book that I am very much enjoying reading.

I have great respect for the family, and thank you for all that you have given to us, Sir.

A few Reviews to cheer me up!

Thank you so much for your kindness in going to the trouble of leaving a review!!

Writing is hard – long hours and loneliness. A book will take around a thousand hours in the gestation! That’s a lot of one’s life to invest. I’ve been writing for some fifty-five years during which time I have created over a hundred book on a great range of subjects – fiction and non-fiction. I enjoy writing but sometimes it does become intrusive and often I wonder whether I should be spending my time in some other way. When I get those moments and feel it’s all pointless I just have to read your reviews and it raises my spirits. Thank you for keeping me insane!

Roy Harper

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT READ ABOUT A WONDERFUL ARTIST

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 August 2021

I have had a most enjoyable week reading Opher Goodwins’ book about Roy Harper’s songs while relistening to my own albums or streaming those not yet acquired via my favourite service. The book gives new insights into familiar tunes and lyrics, brings knowledge about recently heard gems and adds a greater depth to our collective knowledge about one of the most loved singer/songwriters of his generation.
The author’s easy, readable style and deep knowledge, based of hundreds of attended gigs and an almost life-long friendship with Roy, helps take the reader through each album track chronologically, including any associated singles and B-sides.
I came to Roy’s music via 1970’s Flat Baroque and Berserk’s ‘I Hate The White Man’, a fiery, almost contemporary, song, condemning those too rich or powerful to care. I’ve been lucky enough to see several equally emotional gigs. The associated paragraph’s detailed description of the song, the background to its live recording at the then home of English folk music, Les Cousins and the discussion about Roy’s desire to preamble the song, has given a greater depth to my understanding. This skill, to inform, educate and entertain, and in a lively way, is one of the strong points of the book, and will have the reader, leaning into its pages time after time when exploring one of Roy’s twenty-four described albums.
As an added bonus – as such – the author details many of Roy’s live recordings and radio sessions, compilations unreleased tracks, guest appearances and rarities as well. The book contains a fine selection of carefully chosen colour and B&W photographs of Roy in performance, socializing, his album covers and other memorabilia.
This book is a great read and a credit to a wonderful artist.

Phil Ochs

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book

Phil Ochs was a contemporary of Bob Dylan, Tom Paxton, Judy Collins, Joan Baez and other well known denizens of the folk scene in Greenwich Village in the 1960s and 1970s. Ochs was a singer-songwriter who, unlike Dylan, remained true to his political beliefs throughout his career. From melodic renditions of poems by Alfred Noyes and Edgar Allen Poe to classic social justice songs like I Ain’t Marching Anymore and There But for Fortune, Ochs was a lesser known giant in the folk music scene.
Opher Goodwin has written the definitive book about Ochs’ songs. For those new to his subject, it is a wonderful introduction to the breadth of what Ochs achieved and longtime fans will find new dimensions to familiar lyrics. Opher writes with clarity, insight and ultimately, a love of Ochs that shines through, without fawning. I recommend it without hesitation.

We move from the rock of a 2004 White Stripes gig to the deep blues of Son House performing in 1968 in the very first paragraph, which gives some idea of the huge range of personal and musical experience covered in this always lively and thoroughly engaging personal testimony. We are taken on a freewheeling and cheerfully anarchic journey across time and space from the earliest days of rock’n’roll through the vibrant 60s and its many musical offshoots and current influences, with every anecdote giving ample evidence for the author’s central idea – that music transforms and inspires like nothing else, forging an organic link with our own lives and even the politics and beliefs we live by. There are sharp, vivid, honest and cheerfully scatological portraits of his musical heroes with warm praise and candid criticism providing the salty ring of truth. The book has wry down-to-earth humour, a breakneck momentum, mostly good musical taste, fascinating gossip, strong opinions, passionate loves and equally passionate hates – and there’s not a dull moment in it. Written with a warm and generous spirit, in the end it amounts to a radical critique of much more than music. It captures the modern zeitgeist with zest and courage. Recommended.

Neil Young

5.0 out of 5 stars Forensic Examination of Neil Young’s early career

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2024

Another book in the fantastic On Track series from publishers Sonicbond.
Opher Goodwin’s book is indispensable to anyone who has an interest in Neil’s music or in 1960s music in general. This book deals with Neil’s formative years and has a very thorough 10 page introduction setting the scene before we even get to the first recordings. Neil’s life is described in detail and each LP track ( and single) is forensically described. Mr Goodwin obviously has a very deep love and understanding of his subject having been a fan since day 1. Neil Young is an enigma but Opher gets behind th rock star persona. He describes Neil’s early bands, The Mynah Birds, Buffalo Springfield, Crazy Horse and of course Crosby Stills Nash and Young. Thoroughly recommended.

Dylan 1962 to 1970 is another book in the marvelous On Track series, published by Sonicbond.
It concentrates on Bob’s early career which is when he wrote most ( not all) of his best songs such as Like A Rolling Stone Blowing in the Wind, All I Really Want To Do, It Ain’t Me Babe etc. Opher Goodwin knows his subject inside out. He was around in the 60’s and saw many of the 60s legends.
This book goes from Dylan’s first album in 1962 up to New Morning in 1970. I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone interested in Dylan or 60s music in general.

Nick Harper

5.0 out of 5 stars Two old friends, one take newly told.

Verified Purchase

This is not just a book, it is a Labour of love. Other has known Nick for most of Nick’s life. He has a pride in him like a father, or at worst the best of teachers (though he will deny having taught Nick anything.) The book was intended as a companion to three L.P. Collection. It is more than that. Much more. It is the story of a songwriter, musician and maverick. It tells of a man who is committed to two things, his family and his musical integrity. The former should be the first consideration for any person with a family, the latter the method to support and provide for the former. Music is love. I have known Nick since 1984, but not as Opher does. I do not have bragging rights, but I know who he is. Looking back I realise he was enigmatic. I watched him over the years. I saw him to from passenger to team player to engine driver in his musical journey. Biscuits playing from very good to superb and peerless. His songs have taken a simi?at journey. His style has woven down many lanes, albeit closely linked. Through them all you hear Nick’s character. This story was familiar to me, like talking to an old friend. But there was more. The story is bigger than what I knew, the songs more complex, and intellectual.
If you know Nick Harper’s music, this book is essential. If you don’t, this is a guide to some of the most satisfying stuff you will hear this side of Killing Joke, classic 60s and 70s songwriters, modern day guitar wizzkids. A great read in easy style, with delightful interview responses from Nick himself to put flesh and blood to the story. Designed as a companion, but stands up by itself as a great little biography. Not just another chord in your song.

If you have any interest in the education of your child this book is essential reading. Having studied and worked in education myself I find Mr Goodwins insights and experiences very thought provoking. It deserves a place on the shelves of every educational establishment and needless to say a few people at the ministries and especially the minister for education should read this and maybe, just maybe, we could move forward and improve the educational standards of our children where they have been slipping on a global level.
Mr Goodwin shows, his Ofsted scores prove the point, that civility and empathy rather than antiquated regimented regimes can be extremely effective.

This is an outstanding treatise on what education should be in the Twenty-First Century. Goodwin is a gifted teacher who had the opportunity to buck the establishment as a Headteacher and create a child-centered learning environment that focused on the whole child. His empathetic approach aspired to make every staff member and every learner a success. As a Canadian educator, I must admit I had some challenges with idioms that are particular to the education system in the UK. However, these small hurdles did not prevent me from understanding his vision for a better style of education. My only regret is that I was unable to teach with Christopher Goodwin.
