My Surreal Sixties book – Chapter 6 – Pathos and despair.

This is the pathetic chapter! It had to happen.

6.

Their love affair grew in intensity. ‘I love you’ they whispered with every twitch of their muscles. Every moment was spent together. They practiced ‘real lover’s kisses’ in the garage, just like they do in the films. Life apart was unimaginable. They were inseparable.

It was doomed. There was no way that it could have lasted. A world as selfish as this could not possibly let it survive. Civilisation would have collapsed. Innocent love is an anathema to the greed of the world. Innocence has to be woken up to the rudeness of reality. The glazed stare of adoration has to be replaced by the downturned look of despair, the tears of disconsolation and the haggard searching eyes endlessly flitting in pursuit of hope. True closeness never can be allowed to last for long.

She left.

It was no by her own volition. Unimaginable forces swept them apart. The winds of chance that had brought them together now changed direction and created a hurricane that blew them asunder. For all their newfound independence and maturity they were helpless. That bubble was burst. They were thrown into despair with the realisation that they had no control over their lives, their feelings or their thoughts. All that was left to them were a series of grey days following a tragic farewell.

Her father had gained a new post. They were moving to the edge of eternity …… all of ten miles away. The removal van packed the furniture and goods. Unbeknown to them they were also packing dreams, futures and seven unborn babies.

The van left and then the car pulled away leaving behind a tiny broken figure who wanted to crawl under the nearest rock and die.

She had taken his favourite book as a token of his undying love. She had taken her touch, her warmth, her smell, her energy, her enthusiasm and her love. All she had left were memories that would fail to fade with time.
