Charles Baudelaire – I wrote this poem in his memory.
Creativity is our only Salvation
Evolution set loose a set of rabid apes to terrorise the planet. Intelligent monkeys whose deviousness and ingenuity has been deployed to kill, plunder and coerce.
Yet, in our schizophrenic madness, we are capable of love, art, poetry and altruism.
If we could only learn to master our baser instincts and give full reign to our higher attributes we could create a paradise for all; one in which all living creatures would have their place.
I put my faith in creativity.
Creativity is our only Salvation
We have no hope
For we are brutes;
Savages with a lust
For cruelty and destruction.
We have no hope
For we would plunder
Rather than build,
Rape rather than love.
We have no hope
Because we would rather
Watch an act of cruelty
Than enjoy a scene of beauty.
We have no hope
For our instinct
Is always
Fear, hatred and retribution,
Rather than forgiveness
And a healing hand.
Creativity
Must be
Our only
Salvation.

My question is, how does man KNOW he needs that creativity? Creativity is being stomped out all over the US. Music, art, metal shop… All THESE kinds of classes are being done away with here in favor of football, basketball, volleyball… That’s because they make money for the schools. But without that strong desire to create, math, science, the humanities suffer. People involved with the schools here are too ignorant to realize that. (Sorry.. One of MY soapboxes!)
It’s the same here. They are narrowing the curriculum to remove all the ‘unnecessary’ creative subjects to hammer in literacy and numeracy for the international tables. We have become fodder for the exam machine. That’s not education. I’ll do a poem on it!
But people know they need creativity. It’s a basic impulse. We are inquisitive and creative by nature. You can’t drum it out of us. We are fulfilled and calmed when we create.
And THAT is exactly why I can’t not write. Doesn’t matter if what I write sucks or not, I’m just driven to do it! It makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something.
Creativity, in all it’s forms, is what makes us human. If only all those fundamentalists and terrorist would get into painting, writing, dance or drama they might turn into nice people. If only Hitler had kept up the art!
Instead of stealing everyone else’s, you mean? rolls eyes…
Very good Cheryl! I like it!
PS. I did a post with a Birthday card for you. You SHOULD take a look. I think it’s right up your (our) alley! LOL
I saw it Cheryl – it was great! I loved it!
Quite loved Earth, Wind and Fiber! LOL Leave it to my sister…
All so sadly true! Gratefully not dead!
