There is something more understated and less garish about Japanese culture when compared with Chinese. I like them both but Japan is more constrained, orderly and controlled.

No. they seem to value it. There is a very different social ethic.
The only thing I would note is that it appears to me to be a very controlled and repressed culture that has a tendency to bubble up into violence and cold cruelty.
Still a fascinating place to see. I would love to go there at Blossom time. Did you ever see the film “The Yakuza” with Robert Mitchum – really good.

The Japanese have a great aesthetic sense. I like it a lot and blossom is something they cultivate.
