Opher’s Blog – What is it about?

IMG_0523_2

I set up this blog for a number of reasons:

  1. As an outlet for my creative endeavours (my writing, photography, poetry and art)
  2. As a place to express my opinions (often controversial) on matters such as (the environment, religion, politics, education sex, drugs and health)
  3. As a place to share my interests in Rock Music, Beat Poetry, Film and books.
  4. As a commentary on social issues – ISIS, War, Poverty, Fundamentalism, Love
  5. As a commentary on current affairs
  6. To enjoy argument, discussion and debate, and share ideas
  7. To be thought provoking
  8. To look towards building a better future
  9. To advertise my books so that millions of people will be attracted to them and purchase them

On some of these fronts I’ve failed miserably. On some I’ve been successful. As the subject matter is often outside the popular culture and occasionally challenging I did not expect great popular appeal – but I did hope to contact like minded people and share.

So how successful?

What is your opinion?

  1. I think your blog is great, Opher. I love your passion about life and hope and peace. I hope this doesn’t mean you’re getting ready to jump ship!

    1. Every now and then one has to stop and re-evaluate what one is doing? Is it working? And why are you doing it?

    1. Thanks Dave. It’s time consuming and I often think it’s a waste of time. I get to shout at the converted. I’m in a quandary about the way forward.

      1. Know what you mean, Opher, could be I’m not the best judge as I’m so much in agreement with your ideas and appreciate their direct style. I’m also a natural preacher and have tried to vary the delivery with satire, poetry, etc. Softlee softlee catchee monkee, and all that …

      2. It was very refreshing when I retired to be free. I no longer had to think carefully about what I said and how I said it. I wasn’t representing a school and I did not have the responsibility of other people’s jobs if I messed up. I had my pension and did not need to earn a living. I could look, say and write what I wanted. It was extremely exhilarating. I then proceeded to splurge the full range of my creativity and opinions into my books and blog.
I’ve been doing that relentlessly. I certainly did not expect to appeal to a mass audience – more a select few – but I was hoping for some connection. I have a small group of regular participants plus 6000 silent followers. But it is hard to see any real impact.
I think Liz resents the time it takes – she sees it as one of my obsessions – not necessarily healthy.
It’s good if I’m enjoying it – and I do – mostly. It is just times when I begin to think that it is all a waste of time. Why write books that so few want to read? Why blog if it does not attract an audience?
Am I doing it right? My friends and relatives think I’m going about it all wrong. I should focus on one book and make it perfect. I should get that published and then do another. By doing so many I am undermining my own worth. People are bemused by the array and range. They are less likely to read one.
I am presently evaluating why I am doing all this.
Is it for me? Is that fulfilling enough?
I am far too impetuous, unreigned, and quirky; too opinionated and aggressive.
Perhaps that is not good. My views are important to me but of little importance to anyone else – or at least, not many. And all too often people like some things and not others. Does that matter?
Car has just been towed away. Daughter and sons lives are in turmoil. Life is a bit unsettled at the moment. Add that in the mix.
I’m working on that travel book today. I’m writing two other new books. I have the Roy Harper and Nick Harper books to complete and the Blues Muse and my Sci Fi book to find homes for.
I guess I am trying to do far too much that I’m not doing any of it good enough.
