Poetry – A history of struggle – a poem about inequality.

A History of Struggle

Within Britain we have achieved a level of social justice. Nobody should starve or go without a roof over their heads, though I’m sure some still do. There is a minimum wage and health and safety to ensure reasonable working conditions. We have education and health care. Even the poorest enjoy a reasonable standard of living.

But I cannot help thinking that we only get the minimum that the establishment think they can get away with. The fat cats at the top scoop off the profits in inordinate amounts.

If we look globally we see an even greater inequality. While the corporations run things for their own ends, to maximize their profits, billions are on the starvation level and the natural world is blitzed.

It is only ever through social struggle, paid for with blood, that we have ever wrested power, better conditions or better pay from the wealthy.

I do not believe the establishment cares a jot. They have no compassion. They will screw you if they can.

A History of Struggle

There is a history of struggle

Disguised

By a thin veneer

Of adequacy

That controls everyone

In a web of narrow

Expectation.

There’s a small trough of cream

And an endless desert

Of excrement.

As the few wet whiskers drip

While billions of parched throats

Croak

In futile hope.

  1. Here I go, I think you know my views on the working class. I never thought that I would see “food banks” in this country but here they are and Cameron and that shower don’t give a toss, they have no shame. I am not saying that out there, there are not people who are screwing the system they spoil it for all the genuine people that need the help and so many do not receive it. I am entitled to benefits because I have chronic conditions, but I will not claim them as I need it less than someone on the breadline. In this Town where I live the Government has dumped the people they want out of London, this is no longer a safe place. It sickens me at all the corruption that goes on, the cover ups, the helping out their “old public school chums” to the cost of the rest of us.

Cameron has been shown up by Jeremy Corbyn. It just sickened me when I saw the way that Jeremy Corbyn was treated at that Banquet, that should not have taken place let alone the visit shame on the Government and the Royals sucking up to them. They have enough to say about Putin, but China they have done no wrong? More of our Industries gone so the Chinese can flood the markets with their cheap steel and other rubbish. Then the papers trying to make a fool of Jeremy Corbyn, who the hell cares what he wears brown jacket, red tie, blue suit, for all I care he can go starkers (now that would make a change) as long as he does his job, that is more than can be said for Cameron and his lot. To be honest they did come up with the Bedroom Tax, after all Thatcher had the Poll Tax.

If this lot have their way they will finish off what Thatcher started, getting rid of all State owned, what is left? The NHS they are gradually getting rid of. Taking away every single right the working class have, if any, keeping us in our place. We have to fight back, I am 66 now and I would be prepared to go out there and protest, that is of course depending on the police and what instructions they have been given. This Government are the biggest shower I have ever known.

    1. Yeah – I agree Anna. This bunch are changing the rules, shackling the opposition and trying to ensure that it is impossible to get them out of power. They are cruel, calculated and think we are all stupid.
Tristan Hunt (not that I idolise Tristan any) made a good joke that I will adapt – Cameron’s treating us as if we are the inside of a pig’s mouth.
