As we walked to Fraisthorpe we passed the Second World War fortifications. All along the beach were a series of machine gun pill boxes and antitank concrete blocks.

We were preparing for invasion. It looked as if it was only a matter of time before the Nazis would invade. We hurried built a whole network of defences.

Due to coastal erosion these fortifications are now slipping into the sea.

Yorkshire Dales. Up the first mountain!

The trouble with mountains is that the top is never the top. You set your sights and pound away up the track only to find there’s another peak beyond that one. It wasn’t the top. Then there’s another and another. But the views are worth it. You earn the pleasure.
