Rome by day – some photos

There is so much to see in Rome – starting with the art treasures in the Vatican. While representing some of the poorest people in the world the Catholic Church accumulated a huge wealth of treasures and art. One wonders why?

Apart from the Vatican it seems that every corner has an architectural joy, a historical gem or sculpture.

Singapore – the incredible Supertrees!

The incredible supertrees are to be found in the Marina Bay area. They are massive and fully environmentally sound. The supertrees have solar panels, vertical gardens with self-watering systems. They are magnificent – works of art. So impressive.

They knocked me out!

Las Palmas – Photos

I find that it is always interesting to walk around foreign places. You see things you haven’t seen before – architecture, art, plants, flowers, animals and people.

Travel expands the mind.

Sitting in a warm place, sipping a beer and talking to the locals. Experience is what life is all about.

Las Palmas – The Canary Islands – photos

It was warm and pleasant as we walked around Las Palmas. I enjoy looking at the architecture, the art, the people and beauty.

Funchal – Madeira – Cable-car and bus tour.

In order to get my bearings it seemed a good idea to take a cable-car and then one of those open-top busses. It gave us a good impression of the island.

Funchal, sled rides, tiles, art, churches.

Being Portuguese there is a strong Catholic presence. Religion is big. The typical blue Portuguese tilework is impressive and the churches lavish. Even for someone like me, for whom religion is abhorrent, one cannot help but be impressed with the beauty of the artwork.

Tourism is their main source of income. You can go up the hill and pay for a sled-ride down through the streets. I imagine it used to be really wild but these days, with health and safety, it’s pretty tame.

Funchal – Madeira – Photos

Funchal is the capital of Madeira – a warm, friendly place stuffed with art, graffiti and a bit of history.

Brazil – Salvador De Bahia – a last goodbye

We had a last walk around as the sun began to get lower in the sky. The local kids were jumping off the quay into the sea. Dug-out canoes sat alongside motorboats. Art and architecture.

We said goodbye and went for a beer.

Brazil – Salvador De Bahia – Candomblé, Capoeira, markets and art.

There is such a lot to see in this former capital – from the grand decaying colonial architecture to the weirds religious statues.

Poetry – LOVE SPENT

LOVE SPENT

My love’s grown old

The fires run cold

My passion spent

In giving vent

As we drift along

To winter’s end.

For we walk together

And apart

And cannot change the picture.

Where once we would have wrestled with the world

We must now accept it.

It now takes all the time

To fashion a single brushstroke

That may not alter sense

Or produce a single joke.

The meaning has been drained

Into the mundane.

I have been told that I am obsessive. That is true. When I am consumed with a passion it is all-encompassing.

Some of my passions burn themselves out.

My art I approached with a fury. I flung paint at canvas as my head burnt with ideas and need.

Then I woke up one day and the cinders merely glowed.
