My Weird Sixties Surreal Book – Reality Dreams – Chapter 43 – Ageing

Well the book is moving along and poor Messny is in some lethargic apathy with life going nowhere and bogging him down. I suppose it comes to us all. And to think I was only in my early twenties when I wrote this.

43.

Messny Krapbutt grew older. The fires of his youth were gradually doused. Once he had not desired security or comfort; once his veins had run with molten lead that heated his mind to a mad boiling point. He had sought change and excitement. He had moved through life burning his boats and living for the day. He had been unafraid to speak his mind. Life was a struggle to be happy, to experience, to soak up emotions and feelings without any hesitation. He hardly ever saw the danger and rarely his life above death.

Messny had coursed with desire that demanded to be addressed right away. He had run blindly into walls driven by the intensity of his feelings He had tried frantically to make everybody aware of injustice, honour, love and truth. He had tried to right the world’s wrongs with optimism and refused to see any evil lurking in the minds of people.

Tomorrow was too far away to allow the world to suffer; it needed fixing right now. There was urgency. The answers were easy and straightforward.

Through long dark nights he had sat talking his truth in dingy bedsits, cosy in the muggy heat, heavy with smoke and incense. But there was always too little time and too many people. For all of his enthusiasm no progress was ever made and the world was still suffering.

But now he was older his life was too full of his own worries and problems. He did not have time to care for the world as well. Trouble stuck to him like burrs on a coat. They bred like rabbits and seemed to want to drag him down. Those troubles were leeches that sapped his strength and left him a mindless husk that apathetically sat slumped in front of the crystal crusader where the only decisions were the choice of channel.

He was trapped – tied to his mortgage, job and the daily drudge. Each day dragged with the boredom of repetition. His duties were either meaningless or even opposed to most of the things he believed in. It was a prostitution. All the time he had to watch his words lest he offended too greatly. There was an unwritten code of behaviour to which he was compelled to comply. He was trapped by his apathy and lack of opportunity.

Messny’s life had stagnated into the everyday rut. He was a hollow man floating through the day like a shadow, not connecting, not alive inside. He lived in the past, in the nostalgia of past glories when he had strength and energy.

He was rapidly becoming bitter and unhappy. Friends were spread far and wide and there was no more sharing that rekindled the spirits. The old firebrand was dying.

In time he began to forget what it was to be alive and grew to like his new role in life. The memories dimmed so that he was no longer reminded of the heights he had once attained and the intensity of feelings that he had experienced.

Every now and then something stirred him, a thought would re-emerge, a song would play, a chance meeting, and he would find himself reawakened. At those times he remembered clearly. But they soon passed.

Messny was left feeling impotent and lost.
