Poetry – Where did it go wrong?

Where did it go wrong?

How do you explain to a bemused child

That his mummy can’t be seen?

She’s dying on a Covid ward

With her lungs all rancid green.

She came all the way from the Phillipines

These wards for to clean

Now she’s fighting for breath

On the ward of death

Kept alive by a machine.

They offered her no PPE

Not even a lousy face mask.

But when you look for someone

There’s no-one there to ask.

So where do you point the finger?

Where do you put the blame?

The Chinese wet markets?

Or dithering Johnson’s lust for fame?

We’ve got Trump and Bolsonaro

Saying it’s not true,

Get back to work you lazy slobs,

Nothing less will do.

Where did it go wrong now? Where did it go wrong?

Where did it go wrong? Where did it go wrong?

Was it the WHO too slow?

Or extreme complacency?

A lack of preparation

Or the voting habits of you and me?

The world is run on money

For the good of the rich.

They don’t care about you and me

Ain’t life a bitch?

So don’t worry about dying

For the good of the economy

We need you out there working

Watering that money tree.

Where did it go wrong now? Where did it go wrong?

Where did it go wrong? Where did it go wrong?
