Poetry – Memory – A poem about the wonder of personality and consciousness
Memory
What are we?
What is our identity?
Is it our consciousness?
Is it our memory?
The essence of what and who we are is contained in our brains.
That brain is made up of billions of cells with long strands of interconnecting neurones. They form a meshwork of firing that contains our thoughts, dreams, memories, actions and personality. Our consciousness is contained within the chemical reactions on membranes that create ionic changes, that cause nerves to fire.
We understand what happens on a subcellular level but that does not explain the reality of consciousness. We are fooling ourselves if we think that. I do not put any spiritual significance to it. I merely reflect that I am boggled by the whole process.
For me the working of the brain, the wonders of cellular activity that creates consciousness, is as spectacularly awesome as the nature of the universe itself.
Our consciousness is the wonder of life.
Memory
I am a collage of memories –
Some sharp and full of colour,
Others hazy in misty greys,
Some manufactured and adapted,
And most forgotten.
My life is made up
Of ionic changes,
In membranes,
Down fibres,
Trapped in the maze of my brain.
My personality
Is electricity.

Interesting poem! For me, my identity is all that I feel which promotes reactions…”therefore I am.” Ok Opher…give me your intellect on this! 😀 By the way…you have written many books! That’s a lot of thought given to the world!
This is a subject that has fascinated me down the years. Who am I? Psychologists suggest that our identity is a construct. It might not be real at all. It might just be a product of our experiences. Who knows? I love to ponder on these huge issues – mind, infinity, creation, the universe.
All wonderful and thought provoking!
Hi Opher! And Happy Holidays your way! I often wonder who would anyone be without all the opinions and beliefs of others around us when we were/are little and truly could have a fair share of our own thinking without other information already ‘semi blocking’ the chance. First impressions are always hard to shake. Maybe we are a part of nothing until we believe in ourselves! Not what has been instilled in us? We do start out a with a clean slate! ☀️😀
Hi Myth, I wrote a book (Green) about a girl who was born with a brain but no nervous system; who grew and developed without knowledge of the world outside – just with her own thoughts.
I think we live in a world of ideas, thoughts and behaviours emanating from those around us. They mould who we are.
Opher! What a fabulous idea for a book! I can’t imagine where the storyline takes its reader!? If only mankind had such an opportunity to truly be their own nature, their character, the complete freedom of being in their own skin. Are you selling that book? ☀️
Having just completed Neanderthal I have started the edit of my Nick Harper book. Always something in the pipeline. I’m starting to map out another Sci-fi novel called Schizoid!
Memory is a theme in many of my books.
