La Raya Pass – Peru

The train that runs across the incredible Altiplano (High Plains) stops at La Raya pass where there is a picturesque old chapel. It is the highest part of the railway – the altitude is 4,313 m (14,150 ft). Imagine that! Over 14,000 feet! Our highest mountain in the UK is 4,413 feet. This place was three times as high! No wonder so many people get altitude sickness.

Our resident ornate musician cum shaman and his beautiful dancer lost no opportunity to pose for photos and busk for the tourists against a backdrop that was simply stunning.

The old chapel stood alone in the middle of nowhere.  There did not seem to be any habitation for it to have a congregation at all.

No matter where you were people seemed to come out of the cracks with things for you to buy. It seems everyone in Peru wears traditional costume.
