Billy Bragg – Opher’s World pays tribute to a genius.

There are few people prepared to stand on a stage with the courage of their convictions. Billy is one of the few.

  1. Oh Opher, that is so untrue to say the above intro. Your relating only to overtly pop music like Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran etc – but the Indie stuff coming out on labels such as 4AD and Rough Trade was far from daft and silly.
Have you ever heard The Birthday Party, Caberet Voltaire, Cocteau Twins, The Gun Club, Josef K, The The, The Dead Kennedy’s, Flipper, Lydia Lunch, Mission Of Burma, Pylon, The Redskins, The Wild Swans, Alien Sex Fiend, The Nightingales, Shonen Knife, Sonic Youth to name a few off the top of my head.
    Start there and reconsider.

    1. I agree with you on some of that. But the whole scene seemed to lurch away from good solid Punk towards a frivolous dressing up. All the stuff you are referring too slipped below the surface again. The prevailing mood was the neoromantic crap which I detested.
Dead Kennedys were one of my favourites!

      1. Haha, if an 18″ tall multi-coloured punk Mohican hairstyle wasn’t dressing up, well I’ll never know!
