Can a bee sing?

I wrote this poem while in a state of melancholic anguish having watched a programme about the poaching of rhinos.

Rhinos, elephants and forests are being eradicated at an increasing and alarming rate.

I have travelled the world and seen this relentless destruction on every continent. I have stood on streets packed with humans, stinking of car fumes, full of the clamour of vendors. I have seen all manner of bush-meat for sale. I have seen huge brown slicks of sewage snake around bays of blue clear water. I have seen trucks dumping city rubbish on beaches. I have stood among stumps that once were a thick jungle full of Tasmanian devils and koalas.

We reduce all life down to the level of worthlessness. Living creatures are seen as either pests to be eradicated, creatures to be abused for entertainment, or food to be consumed.

It appears to me that we are on the brink of destroying the entire natural world. There are too many of us and we are too greedy and thoughtless.

Perhaps trees do scream?

Can a bee sing?

Can a bee sing?

A bird cry?

A tree scream

Or a chimp ask why?

Can a fly dream?

A worm sigh?

A flower weep?

Or a man deny?

  1. I could barely look at the pictures yesterday, the Ranger who found them was so distraught, no wonder. Such beautiful incredible animals butchered for what GREED

      1. Really you surprise me. The torture that poor creature has to go through. Before long we won’t have these kind of animals, I remember growing up so many of these beautiful animals all now barely existing, I want to cry I literally do. Did you see that poor little monkey locked in it’s cage Russia/Romania somewhere like that, given bottles of alcohol, to drink and then when it is drunk taken out to entertain the visitors. I would shoot the whole bloody lot of them, animals like this are not for entertainment, cruel beyond belief.

      2. It does the same to me.
        I get so furious.
People are so incredibly cruel. We are the most disgusting creature on the planet.

  2. Yes we certainly are, I just don’t know what can be done to stop it I know we can shout and protest but no one is litening – my porch windows and they are large and wide are full of stickers about cruelty to animals, no one listens

    1. There is no option but for enough of us to shout loud enough that they eventually take notice. All they care about is votes.

      1. I’ve considered that but it might just allow them to do what they like. We have to make them accountable.

  3. It is a vicious circle no one likes Politicians except themselves of course. Some years back now when the then MP for here, Labour, came to my door he actually argued with me and when I would not let him get away with it he kicked my fence, the damage is still there, I should have gone after him but did not, damn ex Harwich docker.

  4. No not mine either, but he always gets in and will continue to do so just the man, he is so popular. They have Far Right here as well, Jonathan went out and joined a protest about them, bit worrying. Odd people here far too many eastenders, and I worried about him. David takes Daisy for a walk very late in the evening down to the Beach area, I have warned him not too, got back last night very scared he got down there and as he was approaching the slip way up there were no lights, scared the pair of them. Warned him anything could happen down there, that’s all I need. Their Father was attacked years ago and beaten and left for dead, makes me go cold now thinking of it. I think it all and the crash was the cause of David’s death.

      1. He does take risks that’s the trouble. We have been thinking of another rescue Lurcher, but Daisy is very spoilt she is lonely at times but the only way would be if the rescue place let the Lurcher they have at the moment come here to test them both.
