Poetry – There was a time – a poem about the days before we were swallowed by the machine created by our own numbers.

There was a time

Locked within our cities far away from the natural world we live a life of safety and synthetic joy. Our whims catered for, our dreams indulged, we are saturated in control.

Our actions are restrained.

Yet how could it be otherwise?

There are now seven billion of us. We have swamped the world like an acidic bacterial scum that erodes all it touches. Trees fall, nature flees, and animals are consumed. Behind us the machine creates the plastic comfort and ease.

Yet no more do we taste the free air and live as brightly. This is the age of health and safety, longevity, and false fulfilment.

This is the plastic, sterile bowels of existence.

There was a time.

There was a time when we ran free,

To pit our wits

And use our ingenuity;

Free of man-made laws,

Of household chores and social mores –

A child in the wild.

Exultant on the trails of beasts,

Imagining the feasts,

Full of the adrenalin of the hunt,

The brotherhood and trust

Unfettered –

With unbridled lust.

Free in the elements –

Every breeze is tasted,

All nuance noted,

Every caress relished,

Every flavour promoted.

Overpowered by the desire for comfort

Security and ease.

The love of many children

Has brought us to our knees.

With seven billion progeny

We are no longer roaming free.

The breeze is tainted

Each caress a travesty.

Secure in our comfort

We’ve lost our sanity.

  1. Yes, we’ve lost our sanity. The sad thing is, most of the sheeple are quite happy to stay there! You finally came home, I see. Did you get enough of Trump while you were here? Welcome back! {{{Opher}}}

    1. Oh! Sorry. Just read your other post. For some reason I thought you were in the states! Oh well. At least you were spared Trump!

      1. I can’t see how he can be electable apart from a small minority of extreme nutcases. He’s rabid. Can you imagine him with a nuclear bomb? I think we’d be at war in a week or two – probably with half the world!
I’m keeping calm by thinking it will be a shoe-in for Clinton. I’ve got some reservations about her but they diminish considerably in comparison.

    2. Cheers Cheryl,
Two months on the road/sea – South America! Wonderful. Dangerous.
Had enough of Trump first time I heard him – bigoted, arrogant, racist, – I could swear a few times. Very disturbing.
      Good to be back.

      1. The republicans here are talking about running a campaign of commercials against him. That just shows you how much the political system in the states has deteriorated. There’s no one running I really want to vote for, but I’d rather vote democrat than republican. We’re registered as independents… It’s just all scary to me. And yes, it would be like electing Hitler!!!

      2. There have always been a fringe of Right-wing extremists but how on earth has someone as extreme as Trump garnered a popular vote? What has happened to compassion? Fairness? Equality? Freedom? It seems that all there is now is personal greed. Money talks.
