John Lennon – Give Peace a Chance – Lyrics that were idealistic and positive.

This was a typical late sixties Lennon. The nonsense words and the message. John had reached that stage where he was disillusioned with wealth and life. He’d started off in the early days wanting to be successful, rich and famous. He discovered that it wasn’t a panacea. It did not automatically solve all your problems and make you happy.

He’d tried the Eastern mysticism of the Maharishi and found it a sham. He’d searched around for fulfilment through his creativity and still felt that there was something missing.

John’s big idea was to put his fame and energy into doing something positive, in making the world a better place. The focus of this was war. He put all his energies and ideas into publicising the possibility of doing away with war.

At the time John had amazing pulling power. He could gather the world’s Press. He pulled every stunt going. There were bagisms, bedisms, sending acorns to world leaders and press conferences galore. He and Yoko were all over the news.

He was lambasted. They saw him as having gone mad. They thought Yoko had bewitched him. They accused her of being a witch. Where was the cuddly mop-top? They did not understand what was happening.

How can you criticise someone for trying everything they know? At least he wasn’t sitting on his backside raking the money in and being selfish, greedy and uncaring like all the other fat cats.

John recorded this in the hotel at his Bed-in with Yoko. It is a delight.

It is just what the world needs – Give Peace a Chance!!!!  Stop all the bloody stupid war!!!  Get the world sorted out!!!
