Woody was highly prophetic. This song was written about fascists like Hitler, Mussolini, the Klu Klux Klan and other xenophobic racists of the first order but it applies equally well to ISIS, the Taliban, Al Shabaab, AlQaeda and Boko Haraam – all the fanatical thugs who are practicing their intolerance and hatred right now.
Woody believed that you did not destroy fascism with guns; you killed it in the minds of people. That is why it is so important to look at the horrors or fanaticism, intolerance and hatred and prevent people being sucked in to that twisted ideology. Education is the key; understanding and respect.
Regardless – the whole world is getting organised to wipe out the evil caliphate. It is now just a question of how much pain and misery they can inflict in the mean-time.
Humans are vicious animals but love will conquer over hate.

Racism is not a black and white issue , so you either have it or you don’t like a disease. There are many happy to lift a glass with a Blackman who don’t want him living next door. It would not do be racist if you were a shop keeper in Brixton , black money is as useful as white.
‘ I’ve got nothing against blacks but I was shocked when she married a blackman. ‘ Through the years I’ve heard that said many times. ‘ He’s a bloody good bricklayer even if he is black.’ another one that sticks in my memory.
So what people feel and how they act will depend very much on circumstances ; we are complex but we know largely how to look after our selves and those close to us. Because a woman would not marry a Blackman does not mean she won’t offer a helping hand to one.
I take great hope from the students I taught. Racism was almost unheard. They were very idealistic and gave me hope for the future.
I wonder if rubbing shoulders for a decade or two has changed them. If racism was not lying at the back of the minds of many then Donald Trump would have failed to gain office. He was was helped ironically by Facebook and Google who put him in touch with possible sympathizers. Those two giants are forming quite accurate psychological profiles of us all which are invaluable to those in business. Mr Trump in spite of his national stance would not hesitate to use those global giants for his own ends, and for their part they gain a handsome reward.
I hope not but inevitably it will have.
One has to remember that it was a minority that supported Trump. Not all of those did for racist reasons – many were desperate and wanted change.
