The Nice were a fabulous live band – very exciting – with Keith Emerson stabbing great knives into his organ creating all these squealing noises. That must have been dangerous!!
I first saw them backing PP Arnold. I must say that, at the time, I didn’t pay too much attention to the band. PP was fantastic.
They were largely an instrumental band who took classical pieces and rocked them up. They created a real driving force. Rondo was one of my favourites.
They were good mates with Roy Harper and backed him on Hell’s Angels on Flat Baroque and Berserk. Roy even did an impromptu version of St Thomas’s on the radio with them – making up the lyrics on the hop.
Their version of America was a great climax. Very rousing. I think it managed to get them banned from the States.
America surely was pregnant with promise and anticipation but is now being murdered by the hand of the inevitable!
So today I’m digging out my Nice!
