z. That they deserve to be in power?

Who is really pulling the strings?

It is obvious that Trump is a self-serving narcissist who loves the attention, the adulation, the limelight, power and wealth.

That he is charismatic is not in doubt. He holds his cult in thrall. That is why he is able to get away with murder. Despite his complete lack of morals – his obscene philandering, the rape, sexual abuse and links with paedophile rings, Epstein (who was a close friend) and Diddy; despite his tax evasions, cheating business deals, dodgy interactions with the mafia and foreign despots like Putin; support for extreme white supremacy groups like the Proud Boys; despite being a convicted felon and inciting an insurrection fueled by absurd conspiracy theories; and continuously spouting a stream of lies while, at the same time, shrieking fake news – this criminal conman receives complete, unshakable, adulation. It’s beyond comprehension.

How does he get away with it?

Well, it seems to me that he has concocted a narrative that appeals to the ill-informed, ignorant and unintelligent.

He lies that he has been good for the economy and business. The opposite was true but people have short memories. He promises the earth and delivers fuck all. (He added trillions to the national debt and millions were laid off).

He promises to resurrect all the old polluting technologies – fracking, oil, gas, steel – and give the poor their old jobs back (as if that could ever happen – those old industries are dead as dodos.)

To support his stance on resurrecting outmoded industry he has promoted conspiracy theories, pooh-poohed climate change, and stated that he will withdraw from all international agreements on climate. The man is a selfish pragmatist who only cares about getting elected.

He has undermined all experts, spread fake news, supported conspiracy and endorsed QAnon in order to gain political advantage. Extreme white supremacists and Nazi groups have been empowered (you wouldn’t have thought that we fought a world war to remove the likes of this evil scum). Everything is fake news or disinformation. You can’t trust experts, the mainstream media or the democrats (who are the enemy within). He and Fox News are the only sources of truth!! He will seek vengeance on all who disagree – he is OK with swamps, alien lizards, baby sacrifice in satanic paedophile rings , totalitarian tyranny and the CIA being behind the twin towers. If it gets him elected then the holocaust didn’t happen, the moon wasn’t landed on and the Earth is flat.

He wants to be seen as a strong man which is why he identifies with Hitler, Putin, Xi and Kim Jong-Un. He wants to be a despot too! Fools like strong men and have little understanding of history.

Despite his lack of faith and extremely unscrupulous, immoral behaviour, he has promised the right-wing religious groups exactly what they wanted – a land of misogyny, reduced female rights and macho male power. He panders to the ‘we will not be replaced’ movement by trying to turn women into baby-making machines (remove abortion and contraception, bring back ‘family values’ and get them out of the workplace) Women should know their place – in the kitchen, in the bedroom and not in work. He’d take away their vote if he could (they tend to vote democrat anyway). But the right-wing evangelists love him. They have wet dreams of publicly executing feminists and the sexually active.

He purports to support the constitution (when convenient – not too hot on the transfer of power or democracy) – and so wants to arm primary school kids to keep them safe. The NRA are huge fans.

He scapegoats immigrants and Muslims (immigrants currently take centre stage in the absence of terrorist outrage). There is, due to political extremism, war, climate change and economic hardship, a huge mass migration. Poor people are desperate to escape from gangs, violence, droughts, floods, starvation and lack of opportunities. These desperate migrants are represented as rapists, drug dealers, murderers, pet eaters and scroungers. They are coming to take your jobs and undermine society! Instead of promoting a fairer world, stopping wars and dealing with injustice, climate change and political extremism he proposes a wall and mass expulsion. Who cares about ordinary people? Who cares about death or torture! Kick the bastards out! Human rights is for namby-pambys.

In order to stimulate the economy he wants to produce small government (who needs schools, health care or infrastructure? – Education makes people think and then they see through the lies. What use is a worker if they’re old or ill? – Let them die. Only the wealthy are worthy). He wants to give all those billions in tax cuts (the poor receive a small pittance and the wealthy claw in yet more millions). A policy that added trillions to the national debt when he was in office but spawned billionaires. The rich had never had it better.

He claims to be one with the blue collar workers – despite being a billionaire, living a highly advantaged lifestyle with all the trappings of extreme wealth and a trophy wife to go with it. He milks the poor for every penny he can squeeze or con out of them. For some reason they think he understands them and supports them. They don’t get it – he is exploiting them – sucking them dry until they are husks.

Trump is the charismatic magician who has convinced an army of disenfranchised, discontented, displaced, ignorant, uneducated workers, that he actually represents them!

It’s the biggest con-trick of the century, the biggest snake-oil franchise of all time!

Yet Trump is not really the main force. He is the front of house. Behind him lies the real power.

Trump is in it for himself. Yet, his power and wealth is small-fry compared to the shady dealers behind the scenes. The real power resides with the wealthy moguls, the billionaires and CEOs who stand to gain most; the unscrupulous, uncaring elite who stand to profit enormously; the religious fanatics who can push through their stone-age misogyny and callous, egocentric bastards and profiteers like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos. They own the media and make or break the likes of Trump.

If you look closely when Trump is performing you can see the strings!

Patriotism – Proud to be British???

Patriotism – Proud to be British???

I am British.

So why do I feel so torn about my heritage, so conflicted?

Am I not proud to be British? To be the descendant of people from a tiny island who went forth to conquer the world and create the greatest Empire the world has ever seen?

At one time the British Empire ruled most of the globe. Our Kings and Queens ruled over the USA, Canada, Indonesia, The Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, India, Pakistan, the Caribbean and the Falklands.

We were the supreme world power.

Yet, was this a good thing?

Was this anything to do with my kin?

I think not.

My people did not rule or create an empire. Neither did we benefit.

The empire was created by the establishment – the aristocracy and wealthy traders. They raised armies and navies and went forth to invade, capture and plunder. They set up companies to use indigenous people as cheap labour in order to harvest, mine and manufacture the goods that made them richer.

The wealth poured back from the empire but it did not find its way to the likes of us. We were every bit as abused as those indigenous people abroad.

My people were the poor working people. We were the ones pressganged into the navy, used as cannon fodder in the conquering armies, exploited at home in mines, factories and shipyards.

We lived in poverty and slums while the establishment built great mansions, with fancy carriages, banquets, balls, fine clothes and servants.

The empire was not of our doing, neither was it of benefit to the likes of us. Its foundation was based on racism, arrogance and superiority. It spawned slavery, greed, exploitation and division. It was based on might, force, violence and cruelty. It subjugated and controlled.

Am I supposed to feel proud about this?

No. I refuse.

I refuse to own this empire or take delight in its accomplishments.

But I am proud to be British.

I am proud of the working people who stood up against this establishment and fought for justice and freedom, for rights and fair conditions.

I am proud of the ones who fought for the right to vote, for fair government, fair pay, fair work conditions.

None of it was easily forthcoming.

It took time for men like me to be given the vote. It took even longer for women to be afforded the same.

It took blood and guts.

We formed unions, struck and starved, marched and were massacred, just so that we could be afforded fair pay and good work conditions. We fought for a better, fairer society and it had to be wrested by struggle and loss of life from the hands of the establishment.

So I am proud of those brave women and men and the sacrifices they made. I’m proud to be descended from them.

I look around at this society we have fought for. It is still not as good as it should be. There is still injustice and gross inequality, exploitation and slavery. I look at the wealthy becoming wealthier while people like me slave on zero-hours contracts for poverty wages.

There is still much that needs addressing.

So when it comes to patriotism I think it’s a con-trick.

I’m not going to wave my flag for the Queen or celebrate battles and empire.

I will stand up for the Diggers, for the Chartists and the victims of Peterloo.

They make me proud to be British.
