Kanchipuram – Kailasanathar Temple – 1300-year-old Hindu temple – Carvings and details

Everything was weathered and eroded but the carvings were spectacular. Exquisite.

The weight of one’s thoughts!!

Something that doesn’t trouble a lot of people.

Poetry – Reeling it in

Reeling it in

I’m reeling in the line.

I can glimpse the end

And will soon know

The size of the catch.

I know it will be small,

If anything at all,

Yet I continue

To reel in hope.

For no matter

How limited

The catch,

It is better than nothing.

And if millions

Of us are all

Reeling,

It might just

Be enough.

Looking back at the achievements of a life is a sobering experience. It has gone so quickly and there is so little to show for it. The results of one’s efforts are meagre.

Some say that it is not worth the effort, that it is best to focus on oneself and not bother; that we cannot make a difference. The world carries on with its cruelty and destruction and we are powerless. By worrying about it we only serve to make ourselves miserable.

But I am reeling in my line. I am still pulling on the rod. The end is in sight now.

Java – Borobudur – ancient carvings – reliefs, wonders. Buddhist art.

Climbing around the immense structure is a delight. Everything is ornate, richly embroidered. The art is stunning.

One of the wonders of the world.

The ancient Buddhist world lives.

Unbelievable Java – Spectacular Buddhist temple of Borobudur

I could just imagine this wonderful complex on an island in the centre of a lake majestically rising out of the landscape. Over a thousand years old. It is a wonder.

Borneo – Kota Kinabalu – The beauty of the Mosque.

A lot of wealth, art and effort is poured into Mosques, Temples and Cathedrals in order to prove their doctrines are real. I’ve walked around the ruins of many.

They are so beautiful even when their doctrines are long dead.

Statues and Art?? Should we destroy art because of the immorality or decadence of the artist??

Yesterday somebody damaged the statue produced by Eric Gill on the front of the BBC building.

It appears that the artwork was attacked because of Eric Gill’s sexual deviation (as revealed in his diaries). He committed incest with his daughters and sexually abused the family dog.

I do not think many people would defend the actions of this artist. Sexual abuse is not to be condoned. But those that invalidate the art he produced??

It seems that we are on a slippery slope here. Many artists have lived abhorrent lives while producing outstanding art and music.

Leadbelly was a committed murderer and rapist.

Picasso was a misogynist.

Dali supported Hitler and fascism.

Gaugin was a paedophile.

Caravaggio was a murderer.

The list could go on and on and on.. ……

Does this mean we have to analyse the lives of every artist, musician and writer for abhorrent behaviour? Should we destroy their work if we find unpleasant stuff?

Would we all agree on what was abhorrent?

It seems to me that all those statues of slavers, exploiters, profiteers, warmongers and politicians should be removed!! They represent repugnant values. But destroy them?? I think not. I’d put them in museums.

Destroying art feels like burning books to me!!

Surely we should separate the art from the artist? Surely we can use the art as a focus to discuss the views and actions of the artists?

Wonder of Bali – spiders and art

I just love walking around in Bali. Everything is special.

Angkor Wat – Temples and ROOTS!!

The temple complex had lain abandoned in the forest for centuries. The trees had grown through them. The resultant complex of roots and temples was a living work of art.

Angkor Wat – Wonders and fabulous art.

The details were amazing. Twenty square miles of art.
