The Corona Diaries – Day 475

Today was a rainy morning followed by a pleasant afternoon. We took a stroll along the seafront at Bridlington with a good friend who is staying following the Jazz Festival at Burton Agness.

I was jusr reflecting as we were walking along how sensible we were being. We were not in close contact with anybody. As we walked along in the fresh air we steered clear of people. We wore masks to go in to the toilets even if there was nobody there. Aerosol can hang about in enclosed spaces. We went and had a coffee at a cafe and sat outside away from people. We picked up the newspaper from the shop with mask on and was in and out in a minute. We went to a restaurant for a meal and sat outside.

Looking back at our interactions it was clear that there were risks but we had kept them to a minimum.

Out friend has a medical condition that compromises her immune system. It is imperative to stay safe. I think we all accept that life is a risk but our job is to minimise the risks without reducing life to a misery. I think we managed that.

For our friend ‘Freedom Day’ is actually the end of freedom. She is going back into severe lockdown. As the levels of covid rise all around her risks increase so that even the low-level risks we have taken today will be too much of a risk. She is vulnerable. Exposure to covid could well be extremely risky. The same is true for millions of others – those who have immune system problems and those who are unjabbed. The risks are increasing hourly.

I think I am getting over the huge disappointment of the football result. The team played well and did us proud and Southgate was a great leader (even though I think he made a few costly tactical blunders in the final); he got us to the final.

The same can’t be said for the fans. It is appalling to hear of the violence, drunken behaviour and grotesque racism that has been shown by many. There’s no excuse. I think Brexit has unlocked a wave of nasty xenophobia, extreme nationalism verging on fascism, and outright racism. That isn’t helped by having a Prime Minister who exudes racism and encourages people to boo our gallant footballers taking the knee. He’s fanning the flames of division in much the same way that Trump did and using it for his own ends.

Well done Gary Neville for speaking out about the hypocrisy of our Prime Minister!! It’s about time other people start turning on the cretin!! The man’s a disgrace!

It’s all about power and wealth – whatever the cost to the nation and the poorest members of society. He disgusts me.

Having seen the stupid behaviour of fans I can only shake my head. I ask myself – if I was a virus what would I want? It would be for a lot of unvaccinated people to congregate indoors and sit close together without masks breathing the aerosol-ridden air and hugging each other.

That’s exactly what covid got!! I’m expecting a huge spike.

One might ask where the police were? There was clearly a lot of flagrant breaking of covid regulations. It seems that they like doshing out big fines to those holding parties or raves (rightly so) and arresting and savagely breaking up Women’s Rights marches (without any justification) but when it comes to football louts they turn a blind eye!!

There is a growing sense of belief that the Tories really don’t mind if thousands more die – as long as they are the old and unproductive or the poor who they think are scum. One only has to look at the map. The deaths are grouped in Care Homes and places of great deprivation. Not people of any concern to Tories – they are unproductive parasites as far as they are concerned.

I’m surprised they aren’t bringing in mass bingo sessions to gather the elderly together so they can catch the disease. Who needs pensioners?

The scientists are warning about a massive surge in new cases that will lead to thousands more deaths. This government says it has been following the science. I say BOLLOCKS they have!!

Covid has done the Tories a huge favour (apart from killing off a bunch of people they have no time for). It has disguised the disastrous effects of Brexit (80% of firms are saying that long-term Brexit will have a bigger negative effect than Covid) and it will enable them to bring in more privatisation of the NHS.

The new cases soar, hospitalisation is lagging behind and deaths will inevitably follow – and that’s without the long covid.

Stay safe. We are at the start of a big third wave. My advice (as a scientist) – get vaccinated quickly and stay out the way until the vaccine takes effect!! Not to do so is stupid!!

I'd like to hear from you...
