I originally wrote this as the Gordian Not – a play on words, but after due consideration I decided that was not working, and not really relevant, so I changed the title.
It is the first time I have used satire in a novel and I wanted to develop the humour without getting silly. I liked how it came out.
The Gordians were a race of highly intelligent aliens who bred asexually by budding. Their society was as equally obsessed with sex as our own is.
They had an institute that was set up to conserve endangered sentient life in the universe. The institute was having an inspection. The government was doing an austerity drive.
The Gordians discovered Humans and were totally boggled by our kind of sex.
It enabled me to send up the whole business of inspections, bureaucracy, meetings, sex clubs, institutions and governments in a humorous way that parodied human society in a sometimes farcical manner.
It also told a story.
