I hear all this rubbish about us being Anglo-Saxon as if we are an homogenous race apart from Europe and the rest of the world. What garbage. They don’t know what they are talking about.
We are a mixture of races – mainly European but also with genetic input from all over the world.
A short look at our evolution starkly demonstrates that.
- The Iron Age inhabitants were the Celts who probably originated in India and came to Britain from France and Germany
- The Angles and Saxons (Jutes and Frisians) came from Germany and Denmark
- The Romans came from Italy
- The Normans came from France
- The Vikings came from Sweden, Norway and Denmark
- Through trade and Empire we took in immigrants from China, Africa, Arabia and Indonesia.
- The waves of immigration from the Huguenots, Jews, Sikhs, Jamaicans, Turkish, Pakistanis, Indians, Ugandans and so on – all enriched our culture
Genetically we have mixtures of all these races. There is nothing ‘pure’ or homogenous about the British. We are full of hybrid vigour.
Our language reflects our genes. It is basically German/Danish with many French, Italian and other smatterings. That is what makes it so rich, colourful and expressive. We draw on so many cultures and have such great nuance. Our language is as much a mongrel as we are and all the better for it.
So basically the British are German with incorporations from all across Europe and sprinklings from the rest of the world.
Anglo-Saxons – you must be joking. I’m thoroughly European with a heavy dose of the rest of the world. I’m British.
What have I got in common with America? Two nations separated by a common language. Who said that? George Bernard Shaw.
One-for-all-all-for-one
One world – one people.
We’re hybrids here too, and all the richer for it! I love the colour, the vibrancy, the differences that we each bring to the whole.
When we value each other we are at our best.
The Celts “who probably originated from India”, try saying that to an Irishman!! I take it you are joking. As for this Country, I just find it so hard to understand why you are not proud to be English, or British which ever is your preference. This is a Christian Country and will remain so and those that have any objections, no one is making you stay here. This Country and the rest of the World are in turmoil because of all the do gooders, all the politically correct brigade. You cannot force other cultures, races, religious beliefs on a Country that in the main does not want them cannot afford them in all circumstances.
Hi Anna – if you look at the Celtic history they migrated down through Europe from India. Their language is Indo-European. They first settled in Germany and France before settling in Britain.
The Celtic religion was that of the Druids – a pantheistic religion. Christianity, of course, is a foreign import from the Arabs that came in much later. It’s dying the death, fortunately. The only people in the churches these days are old folks and immigrants. If it wasn’t for the immigrants it would probably have gone completely by now.
The turmoil around the world has many causes at the moment. Much of it due to the stupid boundaries imposed on regions by the West without regard to the tribal boundaries, some of it as the result of the break up of Empire, some of it due to Western economic policy, some of it due to Western initiated wars, some of it due to religious conflict – in particular Islamic Fundamentalism, Jewish attrition and Buddhist aggression. I don’t think any of that is due to any do-gooders or any politically correct brigade. I don’t know why you should associate those things together. I personally do like to do good whenever I can and, of course, I do agree with not offending or upsetting people.
I am very proud of the good things that my country has achieved – such as racial equality, tolerance and justice, the industrial revolution, the unions, democracy, the fight for social fairness, the suffragettes and the antislavery work.
On the other hand I am ashamed of many of the other things it has done – unjust wars, the racism and viciousness of the Empire, the pillaging and raping, the slave trade, concentration camps and such.
I am afraid that I do not see things quite so simply or jingoistically as you.
This post made me smile. I KNEW you were a little bit of this and that! 😀
That’s me!!
