I don’t want a lot
We are destroying the world and we can’t seem to stop.
Power, greed or fanaticism is the motivating force – human nature. I fear it’s in us all.
I am incredibly fortunate. I was born into a stable, civilized country. The law might not be perfect but there is order. Equality might not be brilliant but there is a safety net of sorts. We have the freedom to criticize even if nobody listens. It could be a lot worse.
I did not realise how lucky I was that my parents loved me, gave me room and encouragement and did not shackle me with their own views. I grew up able to think and do things my own way.
When I look around at the poverty, hunger, war, indoctrination and religious mania I feel extremely lucky.
I have always been a stupid optimistic idealist. I think we can make things better, solve all the problems and that the vast majority of people are caring, tolerant and reasonable. I also believe that the greedy, selfish, violent and hate-filled are like they are because they are sick; they have been damaged, traumatized and hurt; they have been brought up to hate, steal, exploit and be selfish.
Human beings are Jekyll and Hyde. We are capable of monstrous sadism and thoughtless destruction and yet we can sacrifice ourselves altruistically for love or belief. What a conumdrum.
It is time we healed the sick and made a better future for ourselves and the planet.
We can do it if we want.
I Don’t want a lot
I don’t want to be a millionaire
With yacht and limousine.
I don’t need a million fans
To shout and scream.
I have no wish to join the club
And watch my Ps and Qs.
I don’t desire all the fame
And to feature on the news.
I only want to change the world.
That’s all.
To heal and make it sing.

You know what, my dear? I’d bet ya dollars to donuts that the vast majority of people (who) are caring, tolerant and reasonable hurt just as bad as the greedy, selfish, violent and hate-filled buggers are. They just handle their emotions differently. Just sayin’…
I think you are right Cheryl. But people are different. Some are tougher than others mentally and emotionally. They have a inate positive disposition that pulls them through. Others go under, give in, become twisted. Some see no hope. I don’t think it is chance that terrorism and fundamentalism is spawned out of poverty and despair. That minority turn to hate. The majority carry on and cope. I think we need to address the inequality and despair so that we don’t get damaged minorities.
Well that makes a lot of sense. I was making a generalization. But you’re right, of course. That makes it all seem that much more hopeless, though. I believe you take a person out of poverty, but you can’t take the poverty out of a person. If that makes sense. So this is the way it will always be… Or is that ME being a pessimist?
Maybe it is just me being idealistic. But if we don’t strive for an ideal we never improve! Help build a positive zeitgeist – that’s my motto.
Thanks for uplifting me again! Have had somw crazy run ins with people recently and was starting to lose my faith in humane humanity! x
Well Andrew in my experience life goes in cycles; it has its ups and downs. There are times when you can’t find your way through and even your best friends let you down. But then the sun shines and it all comes right again.
Sorry to hear you’ve been having trouble with all the buggers. It’s always good to remember that there’s a lot of good people around – most are OK. Things come right again.
All the best – Opher
I get so annoyed when I see what humans are doing to this World of ours, how many times I have shouted when trees are cut down but who listens no one, I hate to see the utter cruelty that humans inflict on all animals, why why do they do it, who listens? What damage has been done to this air we breathe, who listens? We need people like you that can express better than I can the damage being done, don’t stop.
Sooner or later someone will have to listen. I hope we haven’t destroyed it all by then. There is madness at work.
Yes there sure is, I keep putting up my posters in my porch telling people Not to cut down trees, grow them. Stop all cruelty to Animals. I even have a sign “no racism welcome here” – do you think anyone really cares? I keep them there in the hope that just someone will notice.
It all helps. If everyone who felt like you put up the posters it would set a new positive tone. That’s the zeitgeist I’m talking about. We all do our little bit!
I will keep on doing it, thank you.
So will I. There you go that’s two of us. Now all we have to do is convince the other seven billion! Easy!
You are very good at convincing people to do the right thing. I have only known you a short while via here, but I have discovered so much thanks to you.
Yeah? Not made huge inroads into that seven billion just yet. Have to keep trying!
You can do that with your books. I really do mean it, I have learnt an awful lot from you.
My books are selling at about twenty a month. That is hardly changing the world just yet. I run at a loss and probably turn off more people than I turn on. My wife says I am too opinionated and rush things too much. That Ishould polish my books more and get them to a higher standard instead of simply churning out more and more. She’s usually right. But I do things my way as usual. I’m slow to learn. I’m glad you’re enjoying them and getting something out of them. I do write things that I am passionate about. They have meaning and purpose for me. I’m glad that at least one person shares that.
You’ll probably hate all the others though.
No I will not and they are really good I honestly have and am enjoying them and cannot wait until I get to the rest. Don’t change them, anyone who does not like them well they do not like honesty I love that in your books. I will put some more reviews in, hopefully people will take note. Keep going Opher you have taught me so much, Jonathan even said today that you have changed me, I have opened my eyes if you know what I mean.
Well Ginny might open your eyes!
YES PLEASE, I need it – I am making “Ginny” the last book to read.
I hope you are not disappointed with all this build up.
No book of yours could possibly let me down.
Wait until you’ve read more. You never know. Got to go and cook now! Catch you soon!
Enjoy your meal.
Meal enjoyed. Back to writing – sustenance for the mind!
