Undeterred by the clammy fog that dampened our hair and sent tendrils of frigid mist into the depths of our lungs we valiantly set off to explore the autumn colours around Byland Abbey. No ray of sun struck forth to lift the gloom. The colours refused to shine. But we shone instead. We strode manfully up hills and down dales and ignored the droplets of cloying moisture that adhered to our clothes. We ate our sandwiches and watched the fog drifting through the trees and over the hills and allowed our imagination to pierce its folds. I took some photos. I thought they might prove atmospheric. Oh well.
The abbey was nice. I like historic ruins (I’m becoming one myself). Henry VII had a whale of a time pulling them all down. It must have been hugely impressive back in its day – particularly when in 1166 the populace were all living in wattle and daub shacks.

Photos that impress me! Adorable! Autumn is the season where our imagination can go beyond!
I think they would have been nicer if it had been a bright sunny day instead of gloomy and foggy. But you cannot dictate the weather. Thanks for your nice words. Best wishes – Opher
That tile work is beautiful. Makes you wonder how it’s survived exposed like that for so long. ( ❗ But then YOU’VE been exposed for a while and have survived in pretty good shape! I like historic ruins (I’m becoming one myself). Giggle! Me, too! Perhaps we need to come up with fancy, historic-sounding names for ourselves! What a hoot that would be. 😀 )

Splendid <3 This is why I love Autumn
I think I prefer it hot!
Spring and autumn are my favorite can’t stand the heat
I hate the cold and love the heat – as long as I’ve got access to a pool!
Enjoyed all the photographs, and have to ask are you a Tree lover like me. I hate how people cut down the trees in their gardens, I am not too popular I feel as I have so many trees and every time should one die I plant another one.
Yeah – afraid I am. I have an intrinsic affinity to trees and rocks. I think trees have something great about them.
Totally agree. When a Friend died and he left me, much to my surprise, a gift of money I took some of that and purchased and planted one of our great English Oak Trees. Look at it and think of Norman everytime.
That’s lovely – what a great thing to do – to leave a gift of money to friends – and equally great to purchase a tree with it!
Love these photos Opher. I think the mystyness enhanced them. Those ruins are really cool. Love the tiles. Wow. You have a good eye.
Thanks. I love taking photos. I was hoping the mist would create an effect but disappointed that there wasn’t sunshine to bring out the colour. It was beautiful. I’m not sure the mist proved as atmospheric as I would have liked though.
