The National Anthem should be scrapped and replaced with one that isn’t about God, King and Country. In the modern world we do not need any of that outdated crap. There is no god. The King/Queen only got there through barbarous deeds and theft in the distant past, and the idea of countries and nationalism should be done away with; it is responsible for racism, xenophobia, war and territorial stupidity. We need a global perspective and global policies. Corbyn stands against everything contained in the National Anthem – it is really a Tory Party dirge. He did right not to sing it.
You can respect the bravery of our armed forces and celebrate the courage and valour without kowtowing to the establishment. That isn’t his job. His job is to create a better Britain and a better, more equal world.
Good luck with trying to change it! What about a global anthem? what would be contained in that? And what about the languages used? Kids all over the world may be singing in other languages and learning the meanings…Just some thoughts 😉

I agree, I think we need an anthem that make us proud to be British, without forcing us to pledge allegiance to a God or a Royal. I don’t agree with everything Corbyn stands for (although I’m finding the newspapers’ reaction to his leadership very interesting), but I have real admiration for him for refusing to sing but still showing he is respectful of the beliefs of others by standing. A politician with integrity, very refreshing!
Too true. It’s rare to get a politician with integrity these days. They are all career clones of the establishment. I agree with a lot of what Corbyn says and the way he does it. He’s got my vote.
A great anthem for Britain that spoke of unity, humanity, equality, freedom, tolerance and harmony with the world and nature would be great. Certainly not God, King, Country, subjugation and war which is what our anthem is about. Thanks for commenting – best wishes – Opher
