I was very taken with the statue of the naked woman. All over Porto there are the most wonderful tilework. The artistry is wonderful – particularly at the railway station.

Leixões – The Tragedy of the Sea – sculptures on the beach.

The sculptures on the beach at Leixões, near Porto, capture the anguish of a great tragedy. 152 fishermen lost their lives in one tragic storm in 1947. Their wives and family were distraught.

Portugal – Porto – More Art and Architecture.

We were heading for Brazil and a trip down the Amazon. It did not really feel as if we had begun. January in Porto was not quite tropical splendour, steamy jungle or wilderness. It was good though!

So much to see.

I like the art, the architecture and bustling streets. It was good to get a beer, sit out and think about what lay in store ahead! Brazil!!

Leixões beach sculpture – The Tragedy of the Sea.

On the edge of the beach near the harbour entrance lies this monument “Tragédia do Mar” or “Tragedy of the Sea” a sculpture commemorating the Shipwreck of 1947, where 152 sailors lost their lives

Porto is a great city to visit. It has great food and the beer is good too! I love the tiled houses, the cafes and warmth. Old cathedrals, city squares, ancient history.
