The Death Diaries – Chapter 1

The Death Diaries – Chapter 1

P1030177

1.

I am sixty six and three quarters. I have lived two thirds of a century. I don’t want to die but realistically I know that the probability is that I will do sometime in the next twenty years, in all likelihood a lot sooner than that.

Presently, apart from the aches and pains and limitations of age, I am fit, healthy and still have my mind. There is nothing wrong with me. I am merely dying by degrees. We call it ageing.

Death is biologically programmed. It is not necessary. We are coded to die. It is in our genes. We have to get out of the way so that there is food and space for our offspring. We are past reproductive age and hence superfluous.

We do not like to think or talk about death. We ignore it and prefer to pretend it isn’t going to happen.

It is.

As Dylan said – ‘he not busy being born is busy dying’.

I am dying.

  1. Hey Opher – and so it is done, the first chapter of The Death Diaries is written: you’ve climbed those long, winding, steep steps to the top of the slide and now contemplate entropy and the final destination. It seems a little premature to be considering your ultimate conclusion.

Out of curiosity, how frequently will you be writing chapters or is that largely dependant on the rate of your aging?

‘As Dylan said,’ – ‘he not busy being born is busy dying’. Might it be you are now busy being born into aging?

    1. I thought it would be fun to do death.
I think I might find a few angles. But it’s not my highest priority. I completed my 7th rewrite of Quantum Fever this morning. It is now ready to go!!
Any suggestions for what I might put in as a short biog? What would be right for inclusion in the book?

      1. Hey Opher – congrats on finalising Quantum Fever: ’tis another sterling effort (and will be on Amazon in time for the festive season!)

Will you be serialising The Death Diaries on your blog or writing it in private for publication? If the former, then I’ll be interested to read what angles you find. Despite its inevitability, I think for most people it is (somewhat) an uncomfortable subject to contemplate.

Suggestions for a biog? Follow the mystical thread and see where it takes you 😉

      2. I might do a bit of both! I’ll see how the mood takes me.
I have just been designing the cover for Quantum Fever and writing the blurb. It’s given me a headache!
I’ll put it up on my blog. Let me know what you think.

      3. About 65 Dewin. I’ll have to have a count. I’m a long way off covers and blurb just yet though! I think this one will probably bubble away for years (hopefully).
