Puno and Lake Titicaca.

On reaching Puno we transferred from train to boat and headed off into the lake.

First stop was the floating reed islands which were inhabited by a certain race of people – the Uru – who call themselves ‘Sons of the Sun’

.

Looking back towards the city of Puno.

The beautiful lake with its reed beds.

A floating reed island created by the Uru and tethered to the bottom of the lake by ropes and stakes.

I’m sure this one was created for tourists and the Uru live in the town on shore that you can see in the background. The main reed islands are situated 8 miles out in the lake and the Uru people live there for real and still keep up many of the old traditions – including boat making.
