Another slice of favourite books

All the greatest stories, minds and ideas are contained in books. They can transport you to anywhere in the universe. I love them.

31. Norman Mailer – The Executioner’s Song

The story of Gary Gilmore. He was a cold-blooded murderer who was executed for his crime amid much controversy. Mailer takes us through the story in huge detail. An amazing book.

32. Harper Lee – To Kill a Mockingbird

This is a classic. She takes you right back into the southern States with its class and racism and tells the story through the eyes of the children.

33. Woody Guthrie – Bound for Glory

The autobiographical tale of Woody’s early life – and what a tale. Woody was my man of the century!

34. Patti Smith – Just kids

Patti’s autobiographical story of her early days in New York with Robert Maplethorpe, living in the Chelsea Hotel. She brings it to life.

35. Hilary Mantel – Wolf Hall

Hilary’s incredibly detailed story of the life of Thomas Cromwell under a mad theocracy and power of the King and Cardinal. Where life was cheap. It was chilling. This is what fundamentalism is like.

  1. Saw a film on TV last night, well early hours of this morning “Fear and Loathsome in Las Vegas” Hunter S Davis is it. Don’t like Johnny Depp but it was interesting, could not help but think of you and your times in California, did you do Las Vegas I can’t remember.

    1. We drove through Las Vegas. There was a huge one arm bandit with about ten rotating wotsits. If you lined up the cherries you won a million. It was a dollar a pull. Liz wouldn’t let me get out of the van. She was scared. It was about the safest place in America! The mafia saw to that. They didn’t want anything to happen to their punters. I could’ve won a million!

      1. Really you do surprise me I would have thought it dangerous, I can see now you have mentioned the mafia that makes sense it is safe. If someone paid me I would not go there it looks awful, completely over the top. They saved a million when you drove through.
