Poetry – Life is binary – A poem about limited choices

Stanzas and Stances cover

Life is Binary

I was thinking about all those decisions that we make in life. You do something or you don’t. It seemed to me that everything is really shades of grey but there are so many decisions that are stark.

Life is about nuance. If you live it as black and white you miss out on the full range.

Binary is only two options but we have an infinite number of possibilities.

I can never make my mind up but then I go and do something really impulsive without thinking.

Yet so much is a choice between two options.

We’d better make sure we make the right decisions.

This poem was a bit of fun.

Life is Binary

Life is binary

Yes or no?

It’s black and white

Don’t you know?

Plus or minus?

Is or isn’t?

Stop or go?

Lord or peasant?

Binary is good

Off and on,

Shut or closed

Silence or song

I’m in two mimnds

Dark or light,

Hot or cold,

Fight or flight.

Life is binary

Tasty or bland,

Boring or fun

Ordinary or grand.

  1. Right at the moment I have jazz on while I am trying to clean, trying is the word. John Coltrane and Chet Baker, Rod McKuen was rather good at it too, Rod at night of course. John Walker that voice really booms, Freddie Mercury the one and only “Showman”, Sinatra, Dino, Sammy Davis, Andy Williams, Sacha Distell, few other French singers. Karen Carpenter outstanding, Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey. I like some Opera, Henry Mancini I loved and Ennio Morricone (spelt right?), what else can’t think.

  2. No you are hard rock aren’t you. Sorry to say I am a true romantic, not that it done me any good. Jonathan is your type of music I think all I hear is bang bnag bang but I very rarely ask him to turn it down when it is LOUD it is only if certain tracks he plays cause pain to my left ear (Meniere’s). Anything tender does me. We have to be different.

    1. I like a range of Rock, Blues, Folk with a bit of Jazz and Reggae, African and Cajun. It takes all types to make a world – as my Mum used to say.

  3. When we go to Ireland, we have a favourite Hotel it is “The Laker Hotel” In Killarney right on the Lakes, even has a ruins of a small Castle, they have Irish music played, not sure if they still do it have not been back for a while, musicians would come in and play it was great I could never keep my feet still, I remember once being asked to play a Bodhran (spelt right?) could not do it great laugh.

      1. When I went to the Pru the Lady that was in charge of me if you like, was Mrs Gooding during the War she was a Secretary to a Senior Naval Officer at Admiralty, she always had me double check my work before I would pass it to her then she would check it, I always do it not always good as you saw.

Yes, the Hotel and the music were great, should go back.

  4. Great poem. I personally like the full range, but I know people who are very binary. Very shut down. More control that way. Safer.
