The whole universe is made of nothing!

atom

I’ve just read an article about string theory and quarks.

All atoms are made of quarks. Quarks are the smallest particles of matter known to man.

The theory is that a quark is made up of a piece of space fabric that is folded up and exists in six dimensions.

My understanding of space fabric is that it is nothing. So all matter is thought to be made of nothing folded into six dimensions. Amazing.

I have trouble getting my head round a universe with three dimensions (four if you count time). I can’t imagine what six dimensions would actually be. My brain hurts.

So the whole universe is basically nothing folded. Shakespeare was right. All life is but a dream.

Isn’t science incredible. I can’t wait to find out more. Ruth is certainly stranger than Richard!

  1. I once read that if you eliminate all the space that exists between the tiny subatomic particles that make up matter, the entire human race would be able to fit into an sugar cube. This, and your post, make my brain hurt. Thanks for sharing

    1. At one point the whole universe was the size of a pea. Puts things in perspective. Thanks for commenting – all the best Opher

  2. Well we have a lot to say if we are nothing . It’s certainly true we haven’t much time to say it in but still we can console our selves that the graveyard we end up in is really nothing . I was considering writing a masterpiece but you’ve knocked the wind out of my sails now I know it will amount to nothing. A lot of money has been spent on CERN I do hope it doesn’t all amount to nothing those researchers will be so crestfallen.
And if the Wine you drink, the lip you press,
End in the nothing all things end in–Yes–
    Then fancy while Thou art,
Thou art but what Thou shalt be–Nothing–
    Thou shall not be less.

    1. Think nothing of it Kertsen. It is mere philosophy or reality. We are fantasies on the wind. All life is but a stage. We play our parts. If life is an illusion it is still life. I may be merely mind. But mind is marvellous.

  3. Sorry, this history guy got lost at the first turn. Nothing folded into 6 dimensions. How might ‘nothing’ be defined? All I know for sure is that where science is concerned, that part of my brain is a rather obvious ‘nothing’.

    1. Probably lost in the folds John. I don’t think anybody understands it. That is what makes it fun. We are lost in our own dimensions.

      1. Ok, I buy that – that we are lost in our own experience of life and have trouble imagining anything different. This is why we need the visionaries – in every field.
