Too many people damaged by alcohol. It’s the worst drug of all.

I find it interesting that in the UK alcoholism is a choice not a diagnosis. I disagree with the author of the original article – the statement is something like “the only label for drinking to much in the last 70 years is to be called an “alcoholic”. Simply not true (at least in the U.S). Here you can be a heavy drinker, binge drinker, social drinker, or daily drinker. You can have alcohol problems or suffer from alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence. Gosh, there are even more that I can’t think of. Bottom line – there’s a label from almost anyone and so many treatment approaches and options it’s mind blowing. I think the reason people think AA when they think alcohol recovery is because 1. It’s free 2. It’s everywhere and 3. Its relatively easy. Oh and there are different favors for agnostics and atheists too.
Yes. Very interesting comments. I think what the original writer meant was that the only way in the UK to get help was to be declared an alcoholic. There probably isn’t enough support for people with any sort of drinking problem. Thanks for your input Victoria – best wishes Opher.
