Nick Harper – Hark! Review of new live album – so Hark up!

2003-12-07 18.32.28

This is the new album from Nick. I have to tell you it is brilliant. It is a live album recorded at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2003. This is the festival where he won the Angel Award for Excellence in Live Music (hence the title – Hark!).

I’ve always wanted to have a brilliantly recorded live album to go with his previous live double album (Double Life). It is so much better than the many bootlegs knocking about.

The quality is superb. The performances are first rate and the set list is mouth-watering. You can certainly see why he won the award. Nobody else could have come close to this.

This was brilliant for me as I love his repertoire from that time. This was a quality period of superb songs. These are all his own songs with a great range and dynamic. There are the beautiful lilting melodies of There is Magic in this World complete with its delicate guitar work. Then there are the upbeat numbers such as Aeroplane and Smithereens. The balance is wonderful, playing flawless and dynamic superb. You could not ask for more.

This is the Track Listing:

There Is Magic In This World

Radio Silence

Tyger

Instrumental

Lily’s Song

Like Punk Never Happened

Vampire Song

Aeroplane

Before They Put Me In the Ground

The Wanderer And His Shadow

Smithereens

Love Is Music/Headless

He is playing at the Edinburgh Fringe right now. Get out and see him and buy this wonderful album – It’s great!

  1. Yay!!! I like his later studio albums, but Double Life captured Nick at his best, in the live setting.
I’m sure this will be brilliant too. I’m interested to hear there are numerous Nick bootlegs out there – can’t say I know of that many. I’ve recently received a boot of him playing at the Summer Of Love party a few weeks back. Let me know your postal addie and I’ll send you a copy

      1. HELLO! Is there any chance you fine folks might be able to send me via wetransfer.com whatever was in that dropbox link??? I just got to see my first Nick gig the day before Roy’s 75th at the Royal Festival. Massive Nick fan….. just so wish I’d thought to ask if he had any more CDs of Hark! when I was chatting with him after the stellar show he put on. His voice was absolutely stunning live at 51. He played Breathe second, and it was just absolutely jaw dropping. The whole show really 😉

      2. Nick is a complete revelation. I love his stuff.
The Nick book will be out soon. We’re getting it laid out professionally and then it will be available. I’m excited..
I’m sure Ian will put that live stuff out again. He seems to have disappeared at the moment though.

      3. A book from Nick!?? I’d be on it. Yeah hopefully so. I’d welcome any and all Harpic boots or Hark! Might just need to order it and pay the shipping to America as I have many times before. Wish I could get a psychical copy of Double Life too!

Appreciate your response. This book sounds awesome! Are you friends with the man?

      4. Hi Neal,
I’ve know Nick since he was a mere lad and Roy for nearly fifty years. I have strangely put together a book on each of them which might, by chance, come out simultaneously. They are both complete. Nick’s is presently being laid out and Roy’s is waiting on an intro from the man.
Keep in touch and I’ll let you know.

    1. THANKS THAT WOULD BE SO INCREDIBLY WELCOME. I hope to get the email notifying me of another response on this thread. PEACE!

      1. Any news on the Harper book Opher?!? Still need to order Hark! from Harperspace. Cheers!

      2. It’s being held up in the design department. I’ve just got back from my travels. I’ll chase him up. Watch this space Neal. Hopefully soon!!
