The clocks went forward to British Summer time last night and in keeping it began to snow.
There was a cold wind as I went for my hour walk this morning. I felt a bit like the charge of the Light Brigade as I walked down the country lanes. There were rainclouds to the front of me, rainclouds to the side of me and rainclouds behind me. Still I strode on. I could see the rain falling, sheeting down, but none of it fell on me.
I saw it as a metaphor. We will walk on through this shitstorm of a virus. It may be dark and cold but soon the sun will be shining and at this moment I am fine.
I’ve been playing Chuck very loud and writing. I’m not sure about this book. I’m nearing the end. It feels like a cartoon book. There’s humour in it and serious stuff. I don’t know if it works or is just too weird and wooden. I shall persevere!! I need to get it finished now. Too many other projects pressing on my mind!!
I’ve been looking at what is happening out there. Italy and Spain with so many deaths, America on the verge of a catastrophe with competition and not cooperation, with profiteering and putting money before people. It’s a tragedy. Does Trump really want re-electing that badly that he’ll send tens of thousands to their deaths to get the economy going again? Is that a price worth paying? Is it money before people in the States? No wonder everyone is buying guns. There really could be social breakdown.
Here we are still waiting for the storm to come. We haven’t seen a fraction of it yet. People are behaving very well – it’s all very orderly. Distanced queues at the food shop. Everywhere else, including our Fish and Chip Shop, shut. People crossing roads to maintain distance as I go out for exercise (or is that just to avoid me?). That takes me back to my youth when I used to have really long hair – people used to cross streets to avoid me back then!
We know it is coming. All my friends are isolating, but you cannot completely remove the risk; you have to eat! A lot of people are going to be dead before it’s over.
Just think – if they put a tenth of the money they spend on nuclear bombs on research – we’d have antivirals now. We’d all be safe from any epidemic. But they’d rather play political power games, keep up the patriotic nationalism and compete.
I’d much rather have no countries, no arms, no conflict and a global government catering for the needs of the whole world, protecting nature and feeding everybody. But I’ve always been a dreamer.
So for now I am isolated, dreaming, writing and playing Chuck Berry. I shall have to choose someone for tomorrow!!
