Pulling out of Lerwick

We sailed away in the evening sunshine. The town looked beautiful. Wish I could have stayed for longer.

Looking back at Lerwick

Lerwick felt very Scottish. I loved it.

Through the streets of Lerwick – Shetlands.

A picturesque town with a Presbyterian feel.

The Shetlands – Lerwick

On a sunny summer’s day the grey stone of Lerwick looked inviting. The Viking boat moored in the harbour spoke of a populist nod to history dressed up for the tourists. A garage with an upturned boat as a roof was a novelty.

The place was beautiful but had a touch of religious austerity and puritanism.

The Iron Age Broch at Jarlshof

There are a few Brochs on Shetland. I saw one on the Orkneys too. Fills me with awe.

Jarlshof – Shetlands – Evolution of the settlement

It was incredible to see how the buildings change through time.

Jarlshof – Viking Settlement in the Shetlands

Fascinating to go around this fabulous site. So many different layers from Neolithic to a few centuries ago.

This part reminded me of Scara Brae.

Shetlands – Catness Broch

The Shetlands are covered with iron-age settlements. The Catness Broch is very well preserved.

Beauty of the Shetlands

Wondrous but I bet it can get pretty bleak in the winter.

Driving around the Shetlands

We were fortunate enough to be picked up by friends and driven around this fabulous island. A land of historical brochs and ancient settlements, wildlife, cliffs and wonders.
