Petra – Heading out

We clambered down from the spectacular caves, walked past the Monastery with its host of tourists, and headed for the cleft – fully sated!

What a wonderful place!

Petra – Sculpted Sandstone Caves

The most amazing colours and weathered rocks. the hills are honeycombed with incredible coloured caves of flowing rock – like a hallucination, a lysergic universe. Beautiful, I’m sure Gaudi got his inspiration from here.

Petra – The Monastery in detail.

You can see the bullet holes where the Islamic fanatics tried to destroy the statues and reliefs.

Petra – The Magnificent Monastery

Carved into the pink sandstone the magnificent Monastery is carved straight into the rocks! It is meant to produce awe. It does.

Petra – The first glimpse

Having made our way through the cleft we finally reach the end and get our first glimpse of the majestic pink of the magnificent monastery.

Petra – Through the narrow entrance.

It was quite a long walk through these sculpted rocks with many carvings and insets where the effigies of many gods would have resided.

Petra – The Jewel of Jordan

Walking down the narrow path leading to the amazing Petra. I could imagine those merchants from ancient times leading their camels down through that narrow passage. The amazing sculpted striated sandstone. So beautiful.

Jordan – Heading to Petra

We arrived at the entrance to Petra. Had a coffee and something to eat and headed off down the trail ignoring the touters of horses and carts.

We walked past the carvings by the Nabataeans. Homes carved into sandstone boulders!

Jordan – Aqaba in the early morning!!

We sailed into Aqaba as the sun was rising. A haze covered the city.

Jerusalem, views over Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives.

A fascinating place with a dangerous clash of cultures, religious fervours and extremism. History meets the future!!
