Poetry – Living in harmony

Living in harmony

One day a virus will come

And kill everyone.

We act like fools,

Obnoxious ghouls,

Invading paradise

Blowing it to kingdom come.

We’ve been treating animals wrong

For far too long.

Tearing down the trees,

Breeding like fleas

Becoming an ever-increasing throng.

Arrogant beyond all belief,

A strutting thief,

Rampaging around

Like drunken clowns.

Filling the world with grief.

We should treat nature with respect,

Not abuse and neglect.

Cherishing the beauty

From love not duty.

It’s time for us to reflect.

We are busy slaughtering our way around the planet, carelessly clearing habitat, butchering animals and treating the place like a rubbish dump.

We increase in numbers, chop down the forests, change the climate and kill everything in sight and have no sense of responsibility.

We’ve lost our connection. We no longer have the harmony. Nature has become an enemy to tame.

We are creating a plastic/concrete hell while mindlessly and systematically dismantling nature – the fantastic web that gives us life.

We must be mad.

Poetry – The Psychotic Animal

The Psychotic Animal

I am an animal,

A mutated chimpanzee.

I’m taking over the whole world.

Nothing can stop us.

It should be easy.

I know I deserve it.

I’m so intelligent.

Nothing else comes close

I’m a gun-totin’, no deals barred,

Big wheel, city gent.

Who cares about the jungles,

Bloody animal pests?

They’re nothing but a nuisance,

A magnet for crazy

Loony protests.

I’m in a different class –

A superbrainy man.

Capable of anything.

Get in my way. Cause me trouble.

I’ll blow you down the can.

I made a god.

He made me special.

So I can do what I want.

I’ll consume and abuse

And with nature I will wrestle.

I am an animal,

A mutated chimpanzee.

I’m taking over the whole world.

Nothing can stop us.

It should be easy.

Somehow, when we gave up hunter gathering, we lost nature. We no longer think we are part of nature, we think we’re apart.

We invented religions that told us that we were made in the image of god; we weren’t like other animals. We had souls. They were just pieces of meat. They would die but we would go to heaven.

It set us apart, superior.

Those religions told us that all the animals had been created just for us – so we could abuse them as we wished.

They told us that this world did not matter because we were going to a better one after death. So we are free to destroy it.

We lost our way when we gave up harmony with nature.

We’re no more special that slugs.

There is no other world. This is the only one we have.

It’s time we started realising that and looking after it. It’s a wonder. We’re fools.
