  1. As I’ve said before, it isn’t just the Tories, Opher. Sadiq Khan has done exactly the same thing with ULEZ. As have successive Labour governments over the years – “Selective Employment Tax,” IR35 and others. Theft and plunder are built in to the political state at its very foundations.

    1. I like ULEZ. If I had my way I’d make all cities car-free and put in brilliant public transport. Cities are choked with cars, traffic jams and fumes. Time we modernised.
      But it’s all degree Neil. The Tories have taken greed to another level.

      1. Opher, public transport only works for people who have essentially the same journeys as everyone else. If different people need to go every-which-way, public transport cannot work cost-effectively for all of them. And that is how real life is.

        You are essentially saying that you want to impose your particular view of how people should live on to others, without taking account of their differing needs and desires. That’s akin to religious persecution. And all for no better reason than “modernising?”

        As to the Tories, yes they are greedy. But Labour would be no better. The political system, as it exists, allows the greedy to exploit it for their own gain, or for other nefarious ends. Until that system is dismantled and replaced by something that works for people, those in power will continue to be greedy.

      2. No I don’t agree with that Neil. Getting around a city with a good transport infrastructure is not difficult. I would introduce many innovations to assist – escalators, moving walkways, delivery services. You can’t really think that the clogged up roads in our major cities are working? It took me over two hours to get out of London, sitting in traffic jams, and that wasn’t even rush hour. Not much better in Manchester. We need something a lot better.
        It’s not about imposing a view. When you live with people you have to compromise and do what’s right for the majority. That’s democracy.
        The better reason is not ‘modernising’ it’s making life better.
        As for the Tories – well, while there is a level of corruption in all parties the Tories have taken it to previously undreamed of limits. Their greed is outrageous. No other party comes close.

You might not have needed a car while you were in central London, but once you are out of the area of what you call “good transport infrastructure,” that often changes completely. All public transport (except taxis, which are cars anyway) suffers from the so-called “last mile problem.” Your journey is only as good as the way you travel the last mile – to your destination, or your home, or wherever. That is a particular problem where I live, where all the public transport except one very poor bus service is down in the valley, and I live a mile from the nearest shops and 170 feet vertically above that valley.

        As to “compromising and doing what’s right for the majority,” I disagree completely. If you really believed you should do that, you would accept the Tory government without any demur, because it’s what the majority (said they) wanted. I agree with Mahatma Gandhi that “In matters of conscience, the law of the majority has no place.” And so should you.

        Besides which, ULEZ is not making life better. It is making life an order of magnitude harder for those who can neither afford to pay the charges nor upgrade their cars. And the only “benefit” is some supposed tiny improvement in “air quality,” which cannot be measured and has never been shown to be worth anything like the costs ULEZ imposes on its victims.

      4. Neil, I wasn’t anywhere near central London. My son lived way out towards the North. The roads were jam packed. We crawled along. It was always the same. He moved to Manchester and that’s a nightmare too.
        In London you are never far from a bus stop or underground station – that last mile is only a matter of a hundred yards.
        We’re on the brink of a transport revolution. Driverless ubers will soon be here offering cheap door to door service. That would provide an answer to your last mile. A fleet of ubers based locally would remove the need for expensive home vehicle ownership in urban settings.
        I love driving, but driving in cities is a nightmare that nobody enjoys.
        Air pollution is real and there is a huge amount of research on it and its effects, but, for me, it’s the quality of life. I would much prefer to have roads unclogged and a really efficient public transport system (based on modern innovations). I’d like to be able to stroll around streets without constant traffic noise, fumes and moving traffic. cities could be pleasant havens not stressful busy nightmares. pedestrian areas are much more relaxing and peaceful.
        as for majorities; the tories have never had a majority votes for them. no government has. they won an election with a minority. now i do firmly believe that minority views need to be taken into account and, where possible, alternatives, compromises and latitude be augmented, but in some things decisions have to be made for the greater good.
        as for ULEZ – there is a scrappage scheme that should compensate those caught up in this. are you suggesting it isn’t adequate?
        outside of big cities, in small towns and rural areas the neds are different. driving a car where i live is a pleasure and much more of a necessity.

He has come not only here, but also to the liberty website on which I put most of my political writings, and liked both. The idea that Opher is “far-left” and the other website is “far-right” is idiotic. Opher and I actually agree on a lot of things, even if our agreements tend to be concentrated in certain areas (like the Tory party). It’s good to see someone who is willing to look at both sides of the coin: thank you, Chuckster.

  2. Well Opher, London traffic is always bad. It’s a legacy of how it grew up – the villages gradually linked up, and almost all the main roads still go through the congested old village centres.

    It’s not true that in London you are always close to public transport. It’s even less true that you are always close to public transport that is useful for your journeys. When I lived in north-west London and worked in the West End, I had 25 minutes’ walk to the nearest useful tube station. (In practice, I drove to 5 minutes’ walk away, parked then walked the last bit). That was inside what is now the ULEZ zone. Neither of the bus routes was useful either, one going in completely the wrong direction, and the other so slowly that it wouldn’t have been worth using. For that journey, cycling was quicker than any of the available public transport!

    It’s the same in many parts of outer London – particularly in the borough of Bromley, a lot of which is rural in nature.

    As to driverless Ubers, I’ll believe them when I see them- and when the bugs are sorted out (e.g. cleaning, and availability at peak times). Uber is not allowed to operate in my area, which is another problem. The nearest place where I have taken an Uber is Portsmouth, 40+ miles from home.

    Air pollution was a real problem in the 1950s, but the more evidence I glean, the less impressed I am with the figures I see. I am coming to think that the problem has been grossly overstated, and has only been kept “live” by politicized, bad “science” – not unlike the “global warming” scam.

    You’re right that none of the parties has ever won a “mandate” with a true majority. That’s another piece of evidence that the system is broken.

    I don’t believe in any “greater good” – I believe in human rights and freedoms, and the right to associate with whomever you wish without having political or religious dogmas thrust down your throat.

    The ULEZ scrappage scheme is pitiful. A couple of thousand at most – nowhere near enough to enable anyone to buy a compliant car or van. And it doesn’t apply at all to people who live outside the zone but need to drive into it.

    Driving a car where I live is hardly a pleasure – with only two exceptions, the roads are narrow and windy, and speed limits are ridiculously low. But it is an essential. To get to or from the place where I did most of my work up to 2019, for example, it takes 18 minutes by car, and over two hours each way by public transport! To get to or from Sainsbury’s takes 5 minutes each way by car (3 on a good run), against 25 minutes on foot to get there, and longer to get back up the hill with my groceries in my rucksack. The bus is essentially useless, because it is only an hourly service, and still drops me quite a way from home.

    1. Yes, London traffic is always bad. But it’s the same in most cities – Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle – places I’ve been to recently.
      I’d do away with all traffic in inner cities and bring in better public transport and walkways. It’d work fine.
      I think you underestimate how close driverless ubers are. That would transform life.
      I believe in freedom too – on a personal level, but if you choose to live in a community that requires laws, regulation and compromise. Otherwise things don’t work. That’s not persecution.
      Then the ULEZ scrappage scheme needs revising.
      I’ve driven a car or motorbike all my life and loved it but I do not enjoy jams or overcrowding.

This game changer radically changes the balance of power in the Middle East.         Israel has detained (abducted) 7000 Gazans on suspicion. There are stories of torture and inhumane treatment.

        Why has Russia stationed troops and built military bases on the Syrian-Golan border? Israel plans to break off all diplomatic relations with the United Nations.
