Zero Hours

Happy to create zero hours and scurry off with the loot
With their yachts, penthouse suites and Armani suit.
They are quaffing their champagne and stashing cash abroad.
Struggling to feed our kids, food being more than we can afford.
What sort of country have we made where the wealthy get it all?
Where the poor deserve all they get and should be made to crawl?
They really believe they deserve it as they are better than the rest.
Through Eton and Cambridge – for privilege creates the best.
Whatever happened to fairness? To compassion, justice and care?
When greed and selfishness take command we find it isn’t there!

Poetry – Zero Hours

When greed and selfishness take command, we find it isn’t there!

In the sixties we fought for a fairer society and a better world – an end to war and the mad rat-race, equality, an end to exploitation and racism and respect for nature. We wanted to put an end to war and have a more meaningful life with better values.

We lost.

The rat-race has become worse. The inequality is extreme. War and environmental destruction goes on apace. The selfish and greedy measure everything in terms of profit. All is fake news, corruption, bribery, exploitation and short termism. We don’t count the cost on people or nature. Cash is everything.

So we live in a society where a wealthy elite exploit the workforce driving down wages and worsening conditions in order to drive up their profits.

Some have it all and most have very little.

For some reason that elite think they deserve it. They believe they are better than the rest of us and they do not care about the misery they create or the poor creatures they are driving out – just as long as they get their loot.
