A few Book Recommendations

I’m in the process of reading some really excellent books that I would thoroughly recommend:

American Pastoral – Philip Roth

I read this a number of years ago and enjoyed it so much I decided to give it another read. I’m enjoying the second read as much as the first. The rich texture of the writing is so brilliant!

American Pastoral by Roth, Philip (1998) Paperback: Amazon.co.uk: Books

American Dirt – Jeanine Cummings

Anyone who would like to read a gripping story of a families escape from a Mexican drug cartel and fleeing as immigrants into the USA – you can’t do better than this. It puts the flesh on the hapless people Trump and his callous ICE policy are dealing with. No, they aren’t all murderers, rapists and drug dealers; they are real people with real back stories. This is a tale you can’t put down. Every cold-hearted racist Republican should be made to read it.

American Dirt . 2021@Paperback – (18 Feb): Amazon.co.uk: Books

Sex & Drugs & Rock N Roll: The Life Of Ian Dury – Richard Balls

In the course of researching for my own Ian Dury book I have been reading everything Ian Dury. I’m halfway through this one. Incredibly well research and written; it’s a joy to read! I’m loving it.

Sex & Drugs & Rock N Roll: The Life Of Ian Dury: 7 (Omnibus Remastered): Amazon.co.uk: Balls, Richard: 9781915841391: Books

Children at the gate – Lynne Reid-Banks

A bit of a blast from the past. Back in the sixties I was smitten with Lynne’s fabulous portrayal of the plight of a single mum in The L-Shaped Room. This has been sitting on my shelf and one day I picked it up for a read. Little did I know what I would find. Every bit as good as The L-Shaped Room and still holds up find though written in 1968, this book throws a long shadow over the reality of Gaza and the terrible situation in the Middle East as well as telling the harrowing story of a Canadian woman and alcohol. Fabulous book.

Children at the Gate: Amazon.co.uk: Banks, Lynne Reid: 9780701112714: Books

Home Fire – Kamila Shamsie

Another great piece of story-telling that puts flesh on the plight of Muslim families in England and the Middle East situation.

Home Fire: WINNER OF THE WOMEN’S PRIZE FOR FICTION 2018 (Bloomsbury Publishing): Amazon.co.uk: Shamsie, Kamila: 9781408886793: Books

That’s it – five great books that I am reading or have read recently. Love them all. Thoroughly recommend them to you!
