I had to laugh – the produced a list of drummers – supposedly best of all time – featured John (Drumbo) French on the header and missed him off the list altogether!!
Now, I’m not a musician, neither am I a great technical analyst, I just know what I like! So I thought it would be good to list the drummers who I have greatly appreciated down the years!
Keith Moon – The Who’s principal showman!
Ginger Baker – The powerhouse for Cream
Mitch Mitchell – Jimi Hendrix’s bedrock.
Ringo Starr- the underrated Beatles drummer.
John Bonham – provider of that powerful force that is Led Zeppelin
Bill Bruford – worked with Roy Harper and lesser bands (Yes and King Crimson)
Phil Seaman – Fabulous Jazz drummer – caught him with Joe Harriot and drum-offs with Ginger
Buddy Rich – great album with Gene Krupa
John ‘Drumbo’ French – Genius within Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band (certainly makes my list)
Sandy Nelson – Loved those early sixties drum singles – let there be drums
Aynsley Dunbar – never liked the Retalliation all that much but John Mayall and Frank Zappa!
Jerry Allison – Added to Buddy Holly – a cricketing legend – Peggy Sue!
Clifton James – the force behind Bo Diddley and most of those brilliant Chess recordings from the 50s.
D J Fontana – Elvis’s early drummer!
Odie Payne Jr. – provided the beat for Elmore James
Clarence “Jockey” Etienne – Slim Harpo’s man providing that swampy Excello Beat
I could go on!!
