Charles Murray author of The Bell Curve has a very different view of education and he lists his findings to dispel what he calls education myths.
1) Ability varies .
2) Half the children are below average .
3)Too many are going to college , only about 10-15 % are capable of university
4) His last and perhaps more contentious one : the future of America depends on the educationally elite and they are already becoming
Wealthier and more separated from the rest of the community.
Mr Murray believes unless we teach these bright kids to understand virtue we are in big trouble.
Now he is American but his ideas will apply to rich western democracies.
Kertsen – points 1 and two are obvious. We know that there is a range of ability and by definition half must be below average.
I’m not sure that I agree with his statement about college. It depends what sort of course. For some courses it might be the top 5% are capable for other courses it might be 60%.
I agree with the last point. I think the elite are far too selfish and greedy. They are responsible for trashing the world for profit and creating the huge and disgraceful inequality which keeps most of the world in poverty.
We do need to teach these children to be humane, caring, empathetic, respectful and responsible.
Really good point Kertsen.
