The Geothermal region of Geysir in Iceland

A landscape of surreal colours, geysers and hot pools. Wonderful.

Iceland – the thermal landscape and Geysers (including Geysir).

Here it is new. The earth’s crust is thin. The magma is near to the surface as the tectonic plates pull apart and new rock is formed. Water is heated to super temperatures and pumped to the surface to create boiling pools, bubbling mud and great spouting geysers.

This was Geysir park – the home of the original Geysir (not spelt wrong) from which all geysers get their name.

The colours are caused by mineral salts, plus bacteria and algal which flourish in the scalding water. Quite a sight to see!
